LeaughHn. NV· February 1 e. 2000 Best In The Desert Silver State Series Round 1 : Laughlin, NV you but some would try to hold you up. Sometimes it just takes patience." And then there was the challenge of the changing course. "The fi rst loop is the hardest trail to get around on because it's really hard to follow the trail. The second loop is burned in, so that's better, but by the third loop it's just junk," said Davis. Nick Pearson continued the lead duo's trouble-free ride for the first half of the final lap, handed the bike to David Pearson for the last time, then turned to a stopwatch to check the team's safety margin. There were 13 minutes of silence before the second bike dashed into the pits and gasps of surprise when bike number two tumed out to be the Davis/Black· well Yamaha. Word soon circulated that Brown had broken a wheel and was stranded out on the course. The Abbott/Brown misfortune catapulted Chiapuzio and Lehman into third overall. Lanza and Belingheri's 250cc Husky appeared in fourth, ahead of the Honda piloted by Johnny Campbell and Tim Staab, but third on adjusted time was grabbed by the KX125 entry of Caselli and Calkins, who hit pit row sixth in the physical standings. Trussardi and Ward were still in front of the Over-30 Pros and the Krause/Sweetland Yamaha was continuing a wire-to-wire win in the Four Stroke Pro class. The Pearsons' victory was aU but in the bag when David made the first mistake of the race with just 10 miles to go. "I came up on a little off-camber hill and I just slid out. I wasn't doing anything; I just slid off the courseright into the cactus," Pearson explained. "I got back on the bike and tried to sit on the seat and it was like ouch! I had to stand up all the way to the finish." Despite his injuries, Pearson soldiered on. He brought the Danny Hamel Racing/Pro Circuit/Yamaha/ D un I opt R en th a 1/ Maxi ma/Terry C able/TLD/IMS/VP /N -Style/HRP/ Scott/DP Bra kes/G PR/ Alpinestar/ C&M Foods-backed Yamaha in to the finish four hours and 46 minutes after the 141-mile race began and was smiling from ear to ear. 48 MARCH 1, 2000· cue • and maybe they would have a problem." The Over-30 Pro win put ear-toear smiles on TM250 racers Luca Trussardi and Gordon Ward. "My friend doesn't feel very good. He has the flu and I had to ride three loops by myself in a row," said Trussardi. "On my last loop I lost the rear brake pads. We are very happy with our finish." Garth Sweetland, who described the course as "one of the tightest I can ever remember riding," brought the Yamaha he shared with Paul Krause home in ninth overall to take the Four Stroke Pro win, and Daryl Folks and Rick Bozarth (KTM250) took second Over-30 Pro in tenth. "Laughlin is a little tighter than I actually like it but this was a pretty good one for me," said Folks. "I usually spend time waving guys by here and I don't know why but I think I rode a touch faster this year." Jonah Street and Steve Hengeveld brought their Open Pro Honda home 11 th overall, ahead of Husky 250 racers Nate Pearson and Kellon Walch and 125cc racers Matt Murphy and David Rees. CN bughlin u.s. Doug "We didn't know what to think when we came here to race," said Nick Pearson. "This is really my first race back from my broken wrist and I hurt my back two weeks ago, so I haven't ridden for a long time. We came in saying that if we get top three we'll be doing pretty good. We were hoping we could win but just came to ride our best and see what happened. This is great." Davis wasn't quite as thrilled with second overall but he was happy with a trouble-free ride and impressed by his partner's performance. "It was his first desert race ever and he did fine for being an East Coast guy," said Davis. "He's the first East Coast guy that's really come over here and tried a desert race, too. I've got to give him a big attaboy for that." When the stopwatches were adjusted to account for starting times, third overall was in the hands of KX500-racers Doug Chiapuzio and Oakley Lehman (Price Racing/ ProCircuit/Maxima/Answer), who finished three minutes behind the Davis/Blackwell Yamaha. "We wanted to ride consistent and stay on the bike. We rode hard and kept the bike together and basically had a good day," Chiapuzio reported. e n e _ s The flying KX125 of Kurt Caselli and Cole Calkins crossed the finish six seconds behind Chiapuzio and Lehman to take an amazing fourth overall. "We had no problems at all. The bike ran perfectly the whole day and we had a great time," said Calkins. Joey Lanza and Dennis Belingheri (Reno Motorsports/Moose/IMS/GPR /Torco/Racer Resume/Race Tech) continued their domination of the 250 Pros all the way to fifth overall. "We had a great ride and the Husky worked super good," said Belingheri. "All the Huskys here today are brand new 2000 bikes and they worked really well. A lot of people don't know the name Husky anymore. They think it's old but they are really pushing in the desert this year. We are back and they are all new." The stock-except-for-the-suspension Honda XR650 of Johnny Campbell and Tim Staab captured sixth overall, a mere .01 of a second ahead of the second place finishers in the 250 Pro class, KTM250-mounted Bryan Folks and Scott Myers. "At the end of the first loop the pipe just split in the seams. We didn't fall or anything; it just split," said Folks. "We were down by nine minutes and we didn't have time to change it.
