want in the Open Class now, and
some of the guys in the Open Class
are riding 250s this time," said
Lehman. "I think it would've been
easier on a 250 - it's definitely a 250
course because it's tight and twisty,
but we ended up choosing the KX500
for simplicity and it's working really
well for us. I'm passing a lot of people
in the tight stuff."
The Lanza/Belingheri Husky was
running strong at the head of the
250cc bikes that were entered in the
250 Pro class and had opened up
more than five minutes on the
KTM250 team of Bryan Folks and
Scott Myers. Luca Trussardi and Gordon Ward (TM250) and the KTM250mounted team of Daryl Folks and
Rick Bozarth were dead even on
adjusted time in the Over-30 Pro
class, and the Caselli/Calkins KX] 25
was charging along in the] 25 Pro
lead, with an almost comfortable
seven-minute margin over secondplaced Matt Murphy and David Rees.
Further back in the pack, Open
class racers Jacob Phillips and Wade
Phillips (KTM) were battling 250 racers Brian Bruning and Ken Kozlik
(Yam) for the lead in the Expert division, and solo riders like Oren Wheeler were giving it everything they had
in the two-lap Iron Man race.
"It's tough doing it by yourself but
it's a blast, and I never wished that I
had a partner with me," said Wheeler.
"I did wish I could've breathed, though.
I've got a cold and trying to suck some
breath through that was tough."
Iron Woman Kelly Yancey found
herself wishing for a partner about
half way through her two laps of the
figure eight.
"Wow, I'm tired," said KLX300mounted Yancey. "It would've been
easier on the body to have a partner,
that's for sure. It wasn't impossible to
do by yourself; it was just really technical and you get really fatigued, but
it's one of the best courses I've ever
done. It's awesomely marked." Dave
Ondas, who was racing a KX250 in
the Open Pro Class, was also wishing
for a partner.
"Shane Esposito fell and hurt his
shoulder in the first loop. He brought
the bike in in a good position and I
went out and tried to finish the race
so I could salvage the points for the
year," said Ondas. "I felt pretty good
except for the last part, when I got
kind of thirsty and tired."
As the third and final lap of the figure-eight began for the Pro riders at
the front of the pack, the going was
getting easier and harder all at the
same time.
"The dust wasn't so bad because
we got a little wind and that helped
out quite a bit," said Lehman.
"The traffic wasn't so good, though,"
said his partner Chiapuzio. "Sometimes
you just catch the lappers in the wrong
spot. Most of them are really nice and
would move over as soon as they heard
