FEB. 5 Newlywed Joe Kopp from Mica, Washington, rolled off with the win twice in a row on the short track at a race sponsored by Checkered Flag Productions. Running three and four deep through the corners on the tenth-mile track, Kopp, on his Lopko Rotax, managed to fight off I 1 other riders. Seattle's Don Wilson finished a close second, right on Kopp's back tire. "'t was an awesome show," Wilson commented. "This was one of the best indoor tracks that I've ever ridden." The Pro class put on a good show. Eric Rickman went down coming out of tum four, causing a restart of the race. "I knew that something was going to happen, and sure enough I came around and Rickman was laying down," Kopp said. "I knew I needed the hoJeshot to win." Sure enough, on the restart, Kopp took the holeshot and the win. All of the Pros thought that it was really cool that the payback went all the way to 12th place. The Open Amateur contest was a fight to the finish. Riders were bumping bars and knocking each other around all night long. California's Harlund Johnson stole the holeshot, but Tom Simpson was determined to take the win. All nine riders gave each other fits as they tried for the win. In the end, Simpson came out on top, with Johnson behind him. One highlight of the night was when rider Rory Whitney ran over Mark Lang's bike. "I was coming beneath Lang to pass him when he fell," Whitney recounted. "If I would have hit my brakes, I would have went down, too, so I grabbed the throttle and went over him. The track was good but had a few holes. All around, it was nice and sticky. There was a great crowd... Other riders in the class commented that Whitney got the highest jump they'd seen on a short track. and that he handled the predicament with Lang well. Whitney came in fourth. The Vintage class was somewhat smaller, with only six riders, but they had a great race and put on a good show. Matt James, sponsored by Leisure Concepts, took the holeshot and set the pace for the rest of the night. Everyone behind him had problems keeping up, and he rolled on to capture the win, with the rest of the riders battling it out behind him. cue I e newvs FEBRUARY 23, 2000 45
