Haynie moved into third by the finish, over Hinds and Brandon Cartwright. Veteran Dallas Babcock, out of Dodge City, Kansas, rode his familyowned XR750 Harley to an easy victory in the Vintage Pro Twin class. Earlier, in his heat race, Babcock had wheelied over backward and busted his flamed fibetglass, but some ducttape work by his dad allowed him to come back and dominate the final. Teammates (for this event) Bill Snyder and Jerry Hinds collided on the first lap, giving Babcock a big lead to play with as he " wowed the crowd" with big rooster-tails. Kansas rider Snyder finished second on a 750cc Yamaha. Honda-mounted Hinds, in his first ride after cracking some vertebrae last September, came home third, over Yamaha rider Junior Smith. Two vets from the early '70s, Bret Braddy and Tim Newby, both on Yamahas, dueled in the Vintage Pro Single class. Blane Fore got to the corner first, but Newby took the point on the second lap. Braddy blasted around the Wichita, Kansas, rider on the next circuit to take the win. Fore kept his Yamaha in third, over Hinds. Mitch Hovden finished fifth. Oklahoman Rusty Bond borrowed a bike for the Mad Dog Mini race and ran her wide open in the cushion, but he had to settle for second place, behind quick-clutching Ted York. Bill Lewis followed for third in the allHonda event. Vintage Amateur laurels went to Yamaha rider John Varble in a "no contest" run over Jason Chamberlain and Virgil Gaither. Up-and-comer Merle Sherb took 40 FEBRUARY 23, 2000· cue the checkers in the Open Amateur main event, riding the KK Racing Rotax. Sherb and Jeremy Hinkle went into turn one dead even, but the rider from Decatur, Texas, came out on top and cruised to the victory. Bret Sowders pushed the Adams Racing Honda into second place - his best "big-bike" showing to date - beating Hinkle, Cory West and Kirk Thompson. West came back to garner victories in the 125cc and 250cc contests. He received pressure from Jared Enright in the small-bike event but was able to hold off Enright's Yamaha and Jerry Guinn's Bultaco. In the 250cc battle, West, Enright and Jeremy Haynie entered turn one side by side by side, with Enright's Suzuki emerging on top. The rider from Yukon, Oklahoma, went wide on lap three and eventually dropped out. West took the lead and the win, leaving Haynie and Scott Beckley to dice for second place. The two knocked handlebars and allowed Novice Keith Carter to slide into the runner-up position. Logan Sherb and his brother Lucas fought over the lead in the 85cc final until Ryan Cheatum broke up the pair and settled into second. Cheatum was poised to pounce on Sherb for P/W (4-7): 1.
