Thompson (59) snares the holeshot over Brian Shaleen (36), Warren TittJemler (161) and the rest of the field en route to the mota win· one of his four on the day' and the overall 250cc Intermediate victory. He also won both 125cc Intermediate motos for the class overall. Bv GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA,JAN. 23 N early 250 riders from throughout Southern California converged on Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale for the California Racing Club-sponsored opening round of the second annual California Gold Cup Motocross Series. The five-race series, which has close to $60,000 up for grabs in Suzuki factory contingency money, brought out some heavy hitters aboard their yellow machines, including Intermediate competitor R.J. Thompson, who proved to be the fastest rider on the day. In the 250cc Intermediate class, Thompson launched out of the starting gate and streaked off to an almost immediate five-second lead over Brian Shaleen, Warren Tittlemier and the rest of the field. The sandy LACR circuit appeared to suit Thompson just fine, as he greeted the checkers with 15 seconds to spare over Tittlemier. Travis Smith came all the way from a last-place start to earn third, ahead of Shaleen and Nick Mairose. Thompson absconded with the second-moto holeshot, but a miscue on the opening lap left him trailing the pack in last place. Smith inherited the lead, which he held for a lap before Tittlemier dropped him a position. Smith stayed with Tittlemier, and the two of them began to leave the others behind. Thompson was back up into third by the midway point and closing fast. Thompson outbraked Smith a lap later for second place, then sailed past Tittlemier shortly thereafter to once again run out front. It was Thompson by himself at the checkers for a sweep of the class. Smith dogged Tittlemier all the way to the finish for third. Mairose (54) and Shaleen (4-5) earned fourth and fifth, respectively. Although Thompson's come-frombehind ride in the 250s was aweinspiring, his domination of the 125cc Intermediates was equally impressive. He put his American Suzuki/Pro Circuit/Axo-sponsored RM 125 out front right from the drop of the gate in moto one, and by lap three he was starting to carve his way through the 125cc Pro class that had roughly a 30-second head start on the previous gate. By time the checkers waved, Thompson had passed all but two of the Pros and was within five seconds of the leader. Fellow Suzuki rider Shane Bess also did a good job of infiltrating the Pros en route to his strong second-place finish over David Boothe and Smith. Round two was more of the same, with Thompson running away with the win and catching the front-running Pros in the process. Bess held down the runner-up position the entire race. Ross Garcia controlled the third spot until the last lap, when he slid out and dropped to seventh. Jared William's' 5-3 score edged out Smith's 4-4 for third overall. Rusty Holland made the drive down from Fresno a profitable one by taking home the first-place money in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro c1ass- Hull sails to Indoor ST V\Tin es on hjs Demarini-backed Suzukis. Holland split moto wins with Jon Nelson in the 125cc class, then returned to ace both 250cc Pro motos over Bryan Nelson, Craig Davis and the rest of the field. Dylan Lord let everyone know he was the top mini rider on the day by posting a perfect four-moto sweep of the 80cc (14-16) and Supermini classes. Daryl Ecklund went 2-2 behind Lord in the 80cc (14-16) races, while Chris Norr held off Ecklund in both Supermini contests for second overall. eN Bv DAN MAHONV PHOTO BV DAN AND VICKIE MAHONV WICHITA FALLS, TX, JAN. 15 A n overflow crowd of eager spectators greeted the 52 riders competing in the Checkered Flag Productions non-AMA indoor short track at the MPEC Arena in Wichita Falls. Clayton Hull, the points leader in the Texas Indoor Winter Championship series, once again took the top honors in the 600cc Expert final. The resident of Weatherford, Texas, had to work hard for this win, however, as Joe Duvall got the holeshot and led the first two laps aboard his own Harley-Davidson single. After pressuring Duvall, Hull put his new ATK up in the cushion of the beautifully prepared dirt track and. after a lap and a half up there, moved into the lead. Claremore. Oklahoma's Michael Hinds, on another ATK, was the recipient of a "slide job" from aptly named Bull Haynie, bailed off and was hit by the Yamaha of Tulsa's A.J. Eslick, bringing out the red flag. Both riders were able to restart, although Hinds was seeing stars and had a bad exhaust-pipe burn on his leg. On the restart, Eslick charged through the pack, picking off riders on the outside, and when Duvall (who was running second) tangled with another rider, Eslick was able to challenge Hull for the lead.
