Salem Arenacross HAGEMAN, GETTE NE T E TItE REST AT By class, and he also nearly pulled off a double whammy when a moto-one win in the Before The Hill Junior class left the 16year-old with the upp~r hand going into moto two. Gettel and Crawford went head to head in this class as well, with Gettel leading Crawford and Justin Jensen to the finish in the first contest. Crawford collected the holeshot laurels in moto two, but Gettel quickly moved up to challenge the Suzuki rider for the lead after a midpack start. Gettel eventually shoved a wheel inside of the surprised RM rider. Gettel's attempt, though, went awry when he stalled his engine. "I didn't want to take him out to pass him," Gettel said, "so I slammed on the brakes and then it [his KX] just quit. " While Gettel quickly refired his machine, re-entering the race without losing a position, Crawford seized the opportunity to pull away from Gettel and post the victory, giving Crawford the overall victory ahead of Gettel and Jensen. Alex Wirkus and Cody Buyas, two 13-year-old riders fresh out of the 80cc ranks, rounded out the top five overall. Adam Metzler, riding a brand-new Honda CR80, pulled the trigger fast enough to lead the first 80cc moto, but his lead was of short duration; less than a lap later, Metzler lost his front end under tricky, frozen track conditions. Metzler then had to charge through traffic in order to catch the front trio of Alex Hill, Ryan Huege and Yamaha rider Ross Johnson. Hill post· ed one of his best showings of the season in a win ahead of the injured Huege and Johnson, followed by Met· zler and Brock Chappelle. CN CLAY liGHT SALEM, OR, JAN. 28-29 onda-mounted Ryan Hageman, a front-runner in the 250cc Pro class this season, scored his first win of the CMC-sanctioned Winter Arenacross Series in the class, in the Exposition Arena at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Hageman didn't buckle under pressure from Honda rider Jon Kauffman, who was the top Intermediate rider, or from fellow Pro Gary Terlecki in the moto-one tug of war. Hageman's win came ahead of Kauffman and the second- and third-placed Intermediate riders, Devin Connaghan and Eric Rogers, who moved up after Terlecki's untimely departure. Kauffman jumped out in front of his Salem Honda-backed teammate Hageman at the start of moto two, but Hageman moved to within challenging range and then nabbed a lead he would not relinquish, taking the victory. Kauffman came in second but was still an overall winner, nabbing the Intermediate win with II performances, ahead of Connaghan (2-2) and KTM pilot Rogers (3-3). Suzuki rider Keith Kauffman came close to a two-class decimation. He had picked up his first win of the evening ahead of Kauffman in the Before The Hill Intermediate class. He was also sitting in the driver's seat in the 125cc Intermediate class after a strong performance in the first moto. With the race seemingly in hand in moto two, Kadell lost the front wheel, and Sean Connaghan was there to capitalize on Kadell's misfortune. This earned the Yamaha rider the overall win, ahead of Kadell and Yamahamounted Matt Williams. Former Pro Rick Bault's third appearance of the year was a successful one, as the 41-year-old Kawasaki rider held off the moto-Iong challenge from the winningest rider this season in the Over 40 Money class, Dean Johnson, to score a 1-1 win. However, Bault first had to overcome dismal starts in both outings before catching and ultimately passing Johnson in the later stages. Johnson finished second overall, ahead of KTM rider Glynn Higgins (3-3), Dan Kauffman (4-4) and Carl Chadwick (5-5). On Saturday, Kawasaki pilot Austin Gettel fended off an onslaught of advances from Suzuki riders Brody Baxter and Matt Crawford to post an overall victory in the evening's largest class, polishing off the competition with a 1-1 sweep of the 125cc Junior H 24 FEBRUARY 1 6, 2000· cue S Results: "'nury 21-29, 2000 Friday P/W (4-6): 1.
