CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals Round 2: Los Angeles County Raceway PALMDALE,CA,JAN.30 uring the past few weeks, teen L..!lIjsensation Bobby Bonds has served notice that he may indeed be the fastest Pro-Am racer in the country. "Last year, at Loretta Lynn's Amateur National, I had the fastest time there, with a flat two minutes." Bonds once again tracked down the competition and passed his way to four out of four mota wins in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes during round two of the CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. "Well, I just kind of worked by the guys and pulled away," Bonds said. "This course is a little dangerous, so I just took it easy out there." Bonds' closest competition in the 125cc ranks came from KTM racer Nathan Woods, who was a solid second in both matos, while Japanese racer Taka Atsuta did his best to give Bonds a run for it in the 250cc Pro ranks. In the end, Bonds was untouchable, easily trouncing the field en route to his double Pro-class victories. Michael Blose ate his cake and had it, too - his 16th birthday cake, that is, and the overall win in the 125cc Intermediate class. Blose pulled off a great holeshot and battled his Yamaha teammate Billy Laninovich for a portion of the 125cc final, but Laninovich crashed hard and broke his collarbone. "There was a big kicker under the bridge, and Billy hit it and was kicked hard over the bars," Blose recounted. Blose went on for the win, followed at a distance by Chris Tocco, Team Green's Daton Beavers, Turbo Reif and TRE-backed Tim Weigand. Texan Justin Smith took care of business in the ultra-competitive Schoolboy race after two hard motos of racing with Laninovich (before the latter's injury). Smith pulled great starts all day. "I just kept to the way-inside," Smith said, "and even though it was a little slower in the first turn, I would still come out first." Smith topped Laninovich and Team Green's Ross Garcia. Fourteen-year-old Brent Line scored his first 125cc Novice-class main-event win with a perfect startto-finish romp. "I was actually pulling away from those guys," said an excited Line. "I have never won on a 125cc before. I just started on big bikes four months ~ ago." Line's 12-1 was good for fifth overall, finishing behind Donnie Weber, Riley Beckinger, Gabe Obeso and overall class winner Mike Brown. Once again, it looked like a minicycle National, with more of the same large numbers in the minibike divisions this weekend. "We had to tear down bikes today, because there is just too much illegal activity in the minis," said CMC president Stu Peters. "We are going to choose a different class each week and pull apart the top five; it's the only way to get things back in line." Interestingly, this weekend's chosen division was the 80cc (14- 16) class, and some bikes did not conform to the standard-bore rule. "Many of these riders thought you can run .80 over bore, but that's not the case at CMC; this is a stock-bore race organization," Peters said. "There will be no tolerance for overbores in the minibike or big-bike ranks." After several riders quietly bowed out or simply did not show for their second mota, Dylan Lord, who rode a bone-stock 80cc mount, came out the winner. "We were testing our mod earlier with a different type of fork, but I liked my stock bike better," said Lord, who went on to top Team Yamaha's Jimmy Nelson, Team Green's Sean Collier, Kyle Mace and Daryl Ecklund. Another mini pilot who was on his game was Kyle Partridge, who, along with his Las Vegas neighbor Robby Woods, owned the 80cc (12-13) class with a one-two knockout of the field. Woods, the series points leader, was particularly excited. "Last week at the opener, I won, and now today I got second behind Kyle," Woods said. "This is the best I have ever done at the Golden State." Despite having to deal with a traumatic situation, Team Thousand Oaks Yamaha/KTM's Mike Alessi continued his dominant reign over the 80cc (7-11) and 60cc (9-11) riders with another four-mota sweep. Alessi even stepped in with the older Supermini crowd and finished a respectable second overall, behind class winner Jesse Casillas. "After yesterday's incident, I wasn't sure I was going to even race today, but I felt good enough, so I did and everything went great," Alessi said, referring to an incident that occurred during the Saturday practice session "There were these six whoops, and I figured out how to Bobby Bonds (129) struck like a thunderball, riding his Honda to victory in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at the second round of the CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals. jump the whole set, but I guess this parent wasn't paying attention and walked out on to the track. I hit him, like, fifth-gear-pinned, and we both got wadded up pretty bad." Dustin Pipes picked up where he left off in round one with a runaway victory in the first 60cc (0-8) mota. Unfortunately, things turned around in the second mota; Pipes ran into problems and dropped to third, behind Donnie Kearney and class winner Jake Canada. Bryce Stewart continued to dominate the 50cc (4-6) class by once again taking his R&D Racing-backed Cobra to a 1-1 showing, while Michael Truglia was equally dominant in the 50cc (7-8) class, winning both motos over the likes of Nic Paluzzi and Cody Farrar.
