For the 20th consecutive year, the off·road masses attended and competed in the Desert Vipers MC Adelanto Grand Prix, in Adelanto, California, February 5·6. Of the four races he entered, Johnny Campbell (Honl won three, including the Four· Stroke, Open and Pro races. Campbell fin· ished second to Destry Abbott (Kawl in Saturday's Unclassified event. Abbott also won the 0·200cc class, but after crashing in Saturday's Pro race, he didn't compete on Sunday. Other winners included Ty Davis (Yaml, who won the 250cc class and finished second to Scott Myers (KTMl in the Expert/Amateur Vet race. Larry Roeseler (Kawl made his annual appearance at Adelanto, scoring the victo· ry in the Senior race. Defending AMA Superbike National Champion Mat Mladin had the opportunity to ride the MoviStar 500cc Suzuki during a team test at Phillip Island in Australia that concluded on February 3. "After more than five years off two-strokes, Mat fully justified the high reputation he has in the USA," Suzuki team manager Garry Taylor said. "He was trading times with [Nobuatsu] Aoki, and it was interesting and valuable to have his input on the bike. Both Kenny [Roberts Jr.) and Nobu ride it all the time, so they take it as it comes - but Mat was able to bring a completely fresh viewpoint," Despite less-than-perfect conditions, the team was pleased with the outcome of the test. Introduced in 1939, the original Whizzer featured a 1 3/8·hp four-stroke engine that effectively converted a standard bicycle into a motorized cycle. The kit gained popularity throughout the '40s and '50s. The new-generation Whizzer is a modemized re-creation of the original, featuring a 12-volt electrical system, CDI electronic ignition, full lighting system and speedometer.
