tally and sixth place overall. The leader of the
first moto, Carrigan, suffered a mishap and fell
all the way back to I I th place in moto two,
giving him seventh overall. Walls held on to win
the second moto, which gave him the overall
win after placing fourth in the first moto.
Johnson fell back to fourth place in the second
moto, giving him third overall. Vanderlaan took
advantage of Johnson's misfortune and took
second in the moto and third overall. Hayden
Hefner, the only KTM rider in the top five,
pulled up (rom a seventh-place first-moto finish
to third place in moto two, behind Vanderlaan,
and fifth overall.
The riders would have better luck in their
other classes, as Walls swept to the overall win
in the 50cc (4-6) class, with 5aubier right behind
him. Walls also won the overall in the 50cc (7-8)
class, but not without a great battle with
Bradley Harper, who took second, and

Holasek Hangs On at the Canyon
~,D~.!'
S,,!!
By KARA HUTCHINSON
PEORIA, AZ, NOV. 13
s it possible for an Endurocross rider from the
Midwest to outride, outjump and outlast a
bunch of seasoned desert riders at a Desert
Grand Prix?
You betcha.
Craig Holasek (an A rider who should be up
to the top of his Tech lOs in the middle of
snowy Minnesota right now) did just that at the
Arizona Motorcycle Riders Association's last
race of the 2005 season at Canyon Offroad
Park on November 13. Holasek pushed through
the pain of the seemingly never-ending race,
getting in nine gruesome laps.
Bryan Bruning, who came in a close second
only a minute behind, agreed that Holasek gave
it a good run.
"I battled with Craig most of the way,"
Bruning said, "actually mostly chased his dust, as
he was riding very well and very smooth. I
crashed a couple of times on the last lap and
was never able to make the charge at the end
to try and give Craig a run. I was so tired and
beat by the end of the race. I have a lot of
respect for all the other guys and girls who
finished this one, especially Craig and Destry
[Abbott], who didn't seem at all that tired atthe
end. I'm glad Destry showed up and rode the
course; with him out there, it makes all the rest
of us [ride] faster."
The C riders, who rode a separate wave
first thing in the morning and did a total of five
laps, felt the same about the brutal course. Jeff
Ferguson took first overall, just 23 seconds in
front of 14-year-old up-and-coming superstar
Max Gerston.
"[The course] seemed to be very well
thought out and very creative," Ferguson said,
adding with a laugh, "I am always up for some
challenges, although the silt portion needs to
go, or someone needs to do a rain dance the
day before."
Gerston had a lot of fun on the course, and
as his father, Marshall, admitted, he is really
excited about how well he is doing on AM~s
courses.
I
"He is riding great and is not intimidated by
racing against bigger bikes," Marshall said. "He
cross-trains on the motocross track and rides in
the desert on the weekends. We are going to
contest the entire AMRA series next year, as
well as... the WORCs series that are in Arizona,
and also the National Enduro."
"rrhe racers that come out for these events
are] a great bunch of people," Ferguson said. "I
grew up in the Midwest, going to flat-track
races and enjoying all of it. The race crowd is
the same - really good people."
AMRA is looking to hold seven races in
Arizona for the 2006 season, with a variety of
terrain that suits every kind of racer out there,
including a National Hare Scrambles in
February.
