CMC Trans-Cal MX National Series Final Round. Day I: Riverfront Park PHOTO BY JOHN BETHEA Howell Whales on I em in Marysville! By JOHN BETHEA MARYSVIW, CA, OCT. 22 "'T"1le most dominant figure on day one of the I 24th annual CMC Racetech/MTA West Trans-Cal MX National Finals at Riverfront Park wasn't even in the hunt for series championships, but Austin Howell's single-day exploits still landed him in the CMC's Trans-Cal record books for finales. Usually fove-dass efforts are attempted by individuals who are surrounded by minibike opponents, but Howell, a I3-year-old from Red 8luff, California, who has some factory support from American Suzuki, Fly, Renthal. Scott and Barnett, chose the big-bike classes for his quest. Attempting 10 motos in a single day in CMC competition has only been attempted once before - by Mike Alessi, several years ago on a Golden State National Finals weekend, but he opted to only concentrate on four motas during the event's afternoon set of motos; he won all nine attempts, setting the benchmark. So when Howell rolled off immediate moto victories in the 12Scc and 2S0cc Junior classes, and then added the 8Scc (12-13) and Supermini classes, he was heading for lofty territory. Howell's biggest challenge was the 12Scc Schoolboy class, in which he was pitted against an open field that included several Intermediateranked racers with more experience. Ryan Kirk of Windsor, California, a IS-yearold Lost Coast Cycles Suzuki rider who had already won the first 12Scc Intermediate moto, was Howell's toughest opponent for a recordtying fifth moto win in one round. Though Howell hounded Kirk right from the start, age and experience prevailed, and Howell was runner-up, just a few bikelengths back at the checkers. But his second-place finish kept his hopes of an overall win alive. Having missed several qualifying rounds in the CMC North events. Howell harbored no hopes of a championship. but he has attempted five classes several times before. Part of his season was placed on hold, however, when he crashed at the World Minis earlier this year in Las Vegas in 80cc (12-1 3) Stock competition and broke his wrist. His second-moto victories produced overall wins qUickly in 2S0cc and 8Scc (12-13) action. but his foes weren't about to give up without a fight. His 12Scc second-moto effort began awkwardly when he hesitated on the gate; he rebounded to finish second in the moto, but that was good enough for the overall, as moto winne.Thomas Elsea Jr. had only ridden his FMF(TJE Cycles Honda to third in the initial race, with Joshua Duck taking second. Duck also stumbled in the second moto, and his seventh aboard his Yamaha aided Howell in his overall victory. The showdown with Kirk in the second Schoolboy stanza was almost a carbon copy of the first, gWing the youngster three wins and a second going into the final moto of the day, the Supermini showdown. Sacramento's Gared Steinke jumped his Scott/PPS/Prodigy Minisports/Cycle Sports of Salem Yamaha into the lead, with Howell nipping at his heels. Steinke had crashed in the first moto, resulting in a disappointing eighth. Out to prove a point, he fought fearlessly with his year-younger foe, and they exchanged the lead several times. Steinke took over for good near the end, winning the battle but losing the war. Howell had his fourth overall via six wins and four seconds in moto races. His SScc Suzuki, losing coolant, was smoking at the end. But he's been smokin' all day. CN RMRfRONT PARK MARYSVlW, CAUFORNIA RESULts: OcroBER 22, 2005 (DAY ONE) 50 BEG: I. Alec Vasquez (KTM); 2. PHOTO BY LISA GRAGG Garrahan Sails on the Beach! By K. FERRAR EUREKA, F CA, OCT. 30 or the second year in a row, Patrick Garrahan took the overall in the sand. Fresh ofT a winning race the weekend before at Pismo Beach, Garrahan made good use of his recently honed sand skills. In typical Garrahan style, he paced himself for the first few laps, behind number-one-ranked Jordan 8randt and Mach I/NorCal Motorsports/MSR-backed Ryan Powell. Powell, who's been on fire the last six months, took the holeshot and led the first lap before spending most of the rest of the day in second. Shortly after leader Brandt left the race (after losing his shifter on lap four), Garrahan decided it was time to make his move. Garrahan overtook Powell on lap five and started putting more and more sand between himself and the competition. "Sand rules!" Garrahan exclaimed. "I had a good time! The first couple laps, I just worked on breaking down the quad ruts and staying within sight of Brandt and Powell. I felt confident that when it was time, I could make my move and pull into the lead." "Jordan and I were zigzagging the ruts, having fun 'til about the halfway point," Powell 48 recounted. "Jordan went out, and I lost my rhythm; Pat got by me." Only Garrahan and Powell started the last lap before the flag dropped. In an amusing turn of events, Powell ran out of gas and had to push his bike back, but since no one else was on the course, he retained his second-overall standing. Suzuki jockey Roderick Kreiss rode smart. After a good start, he stayed in the top five the entire race, and his consistency paid off with a third-place finish. Blasting through the sand behind Kreiss was KTM rider Nolan Erwin, who battled with A1pinestars/Scott US",s Alex Gragg. Erwin had been first off the line and second out of the first corner, but he went down; however, he wasted no time moving back toward the front. Gragg was able to stay ahead of Erwin for seven of the 10 laps before Erwin overtook him, and they settled into fourth and fifth overall, where they finished. Talented veteran rider Eric Ducray, riding for NorCal Motorsports, managed to fight his way from 12th at the end of lap one to sixth overall, winning his class. After taking second overall here last year, Ducray fought the sand the whole race and spent a lot of energy keeping his bike upright, as did many others. NOVEMBER 30, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS Honda rider Jason Voss was next, followed by IS-year-old KTM rider Jonathan Davis, who held eighth for nine of the 10 laps. Randy Mills, follOWing a great start and a fast first lap in Ryan Powell (28) leads Jordan Brandt (1), third, slipped back to seventh Rodney Spencer Jr. (34), Mason Harrison (82), and then I Ith before finishing Garrison Gragg (42), Rondy Mills (107) and the ninth overall.
