Renton Motorcycles Extreme Flat Track Series Round I: Wide Open Sports Arena PHOTO BV PAUL SIMONSEN Captain America, Strong in Washington! By Annable tried everything but could not catch Miller. JOHNNY GUITAR Whoever was going to win the Open Pro main had their RENTON, WA, OCT. 15 There was plenty of action inside the Wide Open Sports I Arena during round one of the Renton Motorcycles Extreme Flat Track Series. The opener of this nine-race series took place on the well-prepared one-tenth-mile short track, which is onty one of the many features of this huge facility. Picture this: Renton Motorcycles (a multi-line dealership), the Full Throttle Cafe and Lounge, and the Wide Open Sports Arena racetrack - all under one roof1lt has to be seen to be believed! Former GNC Expert Kirk Strong was all set to start the Over 30 main event from pole poSition, but he left before the green light flashed and was sent to the back row. On the restart, Trey "Oochy" Gooch took the holeshot, followed closely by Karl Schenk and Steve Pruczinski. Strong charged to fifth on the second lap and then took fourth on lap three. The fifth lap was unlucky for Gooch, as he slid out and handed the lead to Schenk. As they crossed the line to start the last lap, all hell broke loose in the first turn! Leader Schenk threw it away, Pruczinski checked up to miss him, and Strong squeaked by on the inside and wheelied across the finish line with the win! The 65cc Modified class once again proved that dynamite comes in small packages. Noah "Cream Soda" Miller blasted into the lead, over Taylor Masset and Cody Annable. Masset and work cut out for them. as several current and former GNC Experts lined up to do batde. Mickey Fay Sr. shot into the lead, with Sam Halbert and Kyle Ragsdale in hot pursuit. Halbert wasted no time going to work on Fay, showing him his front wheel in every tum. Halbert was relentless, and on lap four he put an aggressive inside pass on Fay entering tum one. Before Fay could recover, Ragsdale slipped into second. Fay was fired up, and he almost took second back from Ragsdale, but Ragsdale hung on. Halbert cruised to victory with a big lead over Ragsdale and Fay. Eric Rickman, Jethro Halbert, Dan Stanley and Jeff Hiatt rounded out the top seven. At the flash of the green light, the 250cc/450cc Amateurs charged into turn one, and all except one came out of tum two. J.D. Beach got the short end of all the bumping and went down. He picked up his bike and continued on, but he was dead last at that point. Brady "Captain America" Mueller was in the lead, with Kenan Duncan and Shane Tonsgart close behind. Mickey Fay Jr. was fourth and closing. Fay Jr. passed Duncan and then Tonsgart to move into second, but Mueller was long gone and won with room to spare. The 85cc Modified main was all jake Burton's. Cole Frederickson and Cody Lambert finished second and third, respectively. CN CMC Trans cal Motocross Series. Pacific Northwest Region Round 2: Albany Motorsports Park Hill, Urquhart Unstoppable! By CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, OCT. 16 regon's Josh Hill had spent barely one month in the Pro-class ranks, yet the 16year-old from Yoncalla had already posted some impressive results. Hill's latest wins came at the second of two Pacific Northwest Region rounds of the CMC Trans-Cal Motocross Series, held at Albany Motorsports Park. On this day, Hill posted the overall Before The Hill Intennediate, 125cc Pro, 2SOcc Pro and Open Pro victories, joining Washington's Kevin Urquhart as the day's top performers. The Yamaha-mounted Hill had tough competition in his three Pro-class wins, as Honda rider Ty "Tiger" Lacey, who recently placed 10th overall in the premier 2SOcc class at the U.S. Open Supercross, gave Hill fits in several motos. In the end, Hill amassed eight mota victories to complete a perfect day. Lacey used 2-2 finishes in the I25cc and 250cc Pro classes to gamer the second-place money. For the past two seasons, Urquhart has been among the top performers in the Intermediate classes, and on this day he easily won the I 25cc and 250cc Intennediate classes, despite attempts by many top local riders to end the Washingtonian's domination. Matt Wilson, Danny Gubser and Erik Meusling stuck close to Urquhart. but in the end Urquhart stretched out leads on the competition in all four of his motos and stood head and shoulders above the rest of the competition at O SO the end of the day. Hill's first overall win of the day came in the combined Before The Hill Intennediate/junior contest. Hill assumed the lead at the start of both motos and easily captured both wins, ahead of Meusling and southern Oregon rider Brad Goodson. Hill didn't get much rest in between motos, as the I25cc Pro class was two motos later. Hill grabbed the lead, followed by Lacey and Adam Metzler, who spent much of both motos battling for second, until errors on Metzler's part dropped the first-year Pro well behind both Hill and Lacey. Lacey used a pair of good starts to briefly lead Hill in the two 2SOcc Pro motos, although Hill would eventually work past the AMA National and Supercross veteran. Lacey's best results came in mote one, while fending off Hill for the fim three laps. The two tangled, sending L.acey to the ground, and aiding in Hill's motoone win. Lacey forged through the fleld after remounting and placed second, ahead of Sullivan, Metzler, Rory Sullivan and Don Bisceglia. Moto two was a repeat of the fim, as Hill shrugged off Lacey to open up a IO-second lead, which he'd use to capture his final win of the day (after winning the Open Pro class earlier). Lacey did all he could to keep Hill in his sights but finished 2-2 on the day, ahead of Metzler (4-3), Sullivan (3-4) and Bisceglia (5-5). "My bikes are brand new and bone stock, for that matter," Lacey said. "That makes it even harder to stick with Josh."
