Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross SEries
Round 2: Woodland Motocross Park
Anderson Annihilates 'em!
By CLAY LIGHT
WOODLAND, WA, OCT. 22
B
ack in the late 1970s and early '80s, Jim
Anderson was one of the most feared
motocross competitors on the AMA National
Motocross Series. He was surely among the
Northwest's elite at that time, and at one point
he carried the National number-I 9 plate. Some
25 years later, he's back to his winning ways,
this time dUring Vintage and Evolution racing at
Woodland Motocross Park in southwestern
Washington, site of round two of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series:
Anderson, riding a Yamaha YZ465, soared
to the overall Over 40 and 250cc Evolution
Expert-class wins, both via I-I placings.
Anderson had tough competition from several

top Northwest riders - mainly his fellow
Washingtonians Monty Price and Leon Capps but in the end it was all Anderson.
Capps got the best of Anderson and the
rest of the field at the start of the first 250cc
moto, but it didn't take Anderson long to won<
his way past Capps and post the victory. Moto
two was much the same: Anderson found his
way into the lead shortly after the unleashing
and capped off a I-I sweep, ahead of Capps
(2-2), Maico-mounted Randy Brown (3-3),
Lyndel Raphael (5-4) and Dan Cunha (4-5).
Another former National star, Maico rider
Rick Poulin, was among the front-runners in
two Evo classes, the Over 50 and Open Expert,
but it was another Maico rider, Doug Hasfos,
who carted off a pair of overall wins in those
classes. Hasfos and visiting Californian Rick
Doughty split moto wins in the competitive
Over 50 class, while Poulin, who spent much of
both motos battling with both riders, ended up
third via 3-3 placlngs. Hasfos' Open Expertclass win came ahead of Suzuki rider Jay Lael
and Mako jockey Marvin Newton.
Poulin also gave Randy 5kiver fits in the Over
50 Vintage Expert class, but the end results
favored Skiver, as has been the case for the past
several seasons at Woodland. Skiver, riding a
BSA, first snared an overall win in the class to
lead Poulin (2-2), Russ Hoehn (4-3) and fonner
Can-Arn factory rider Buck Murphy, whose 3-4
finishes netted him fourth overall, despite not
having competed in some time. Murphy, riding a
1974 Yamaha YZ, finished ahead of Montesamounted Charlie Brown (5-5).
Travis Anderberg regularly makes the long
trek from Spokane to compete, and it paid off
on this day, as he captured the overall 250cc

Round 6: Bremen Race Park

BREMEN, GA, OCT. 23
"T"he first cool weekend of the year brought
I about some very hot racing, as the Red
Bull, Maxxis, Thor and Scott-sponsored Thundercross came to Bremen. Many hours of work
yielded the best track conditions for the Pros.
The Four-Stroke Nationals and the Georgia
Championship Series were combined for a full
day of racing, and it is a wonder what 400-plus
motorcycles can do to a racetrack! The first
250cc Pro-Am moto is ready to go, so let's get
a seat for the next 20 minutes plus two laps!
The gate fell at I I a.m., and it was the Zach
Osborne show in the first 250cc Pro-Am moto.
KTM sent one fast mot.orcycle, and Osborne
motored away from everyone in the class in
the opening moto. Chad Ward was behind
Osbome at the start but faded quickly. Chase

Borders, Broc Tickle and Chris McCorkel
were in the hunt. Tickle, on his Serious
Racewear Honda, was running lap times close
to those of the leader, but he was unable to
close the gap. Chad Charbonneau followed for
the third spot on his Honda. Honda of Houston
sent Jase Lewis to Bremen, and he managed to
finish fourth in the first moto, ahead of
Benjamin Hamilton's Honda.
At I p.m., the Pro-Am 450s took to the
track, and it was Lewis winning the first moto
with some smooth riding on the familiar track.
Tickle took second spot after chasing Lewis.
Honda rider Jacob Saylor took third place with
a steady ride. Suzuki jockey Clint Shealy rallied
at the end to garner fourth place, over Levi
Kilbarger's Honda.
There was no intermission (except for track
repairs), and the 3 p.m. moto of the 250cc

list of double·c1ass winners on the day.
Anderberg's 250c( win came via sheer
consistency, as Ed Russell and Jim Neinstadt
were moto winners in the class. Anderberg
trailed the winners of both motos to card 2-2
performances, ahead of Russell (3-1),
Neinstadt (1-4), Bryan Anderberg (5-4) and
Mike Caruso (6-5).
Kawasaki rider Mike Harritt came close to
capturing two overall wins. On his 1975
Kawasaki KX, Harritt earned the overall 250cc
Expert-class win and placed second, behind
Chris Clark, in the Over 30 Expert class. CN
