Vet X Fall Series Round 5: Cahuilla Creek MX Park Killer Bs Sting the CompetitionI Bv STEVE EMlER ANZA, CA, OCT. 30 ahuilla Creek hosted the fifth round of the Vet X Fall Extreme Prize Give-Away Series, presenting a fast track up and down the hills. The Cahuilla Creek staff reversed the direction of the track, throwing a curveball to the Vet X riders who hadn't raced there in several weeks. Honda off-road racer Robby Bell used the off weekend in his desert-racing schedule to test his speed against the Vet X Open Pro class. When the gate dropped in the first moto, the Precision Concepts-backed rider jumped out to an early lead, with Tag/One Industries/Alloy-backed Todd Mitchell chasing him off the start. Bell opened up a commanding lead in the early laps, with Mitchell pushing hard to catch up to him. Bell never let off, and at the end of the race he had a 16-second margin over Mitchell, who took the second spot. Third place was claimed by Carter Gurnee, who battled his way forward from a last-place start and keep his forward momentum going throughout the moto to claim that position. The second moto once again saw Bell emerge from the pack as they thundered out of the first turn. The track was much rougher this mota, and he put his off-road skills to work, displaying blazing speed through the whoops and bumps on the track, and he pulled out to another big lead. Gurnee was chasing him in second place, with MTI's Willy Musgrave in third. In a repeat of his moto-one performance, Bell crossed the checkers with 17 seconds on second-placed Gurnee. Musgrave crossed the line in third. With Bell claiming the overall, Gurnee took second with 3-2 finishes, and third overall was Jason Larson, who had consistent 4-4 finishes for the day. The never-ending battle in the 28-35 Intermediate class between Mitchell Bailey and Derric Swinfard happened again at Cahuilla Creek. In the first mota, Bailey and Swinfard dueled off the start, with Bailey getting the early lead. On lap three, SWinfard had troubles on the track and dropped all the way to 10th place, giving Bailey a cushion over Factory Effex/Spy/RG3/Maxxis/No Toil-backed Mike Tomlinson, who was quietly chasing the early leaders, and another Factory Effex-backed rider, Andre Brandes, worked his way up to third place. When the checkers flew, it was Bailey, Tomlinson and Brandes claiming the top three spots. Swinfard was looking to redeem himself in the second moto, and he came out swinging. He was in third place as they came around to complete the first lap, which was led by Tomlinson and Loren Pochirowski. SWinfard passed Pochirowksi early and then set his sights on the leader. Tomlinson had gained a sizable lead, but this didn't deter Swinfard. Meanwhile, Bailey was also making a charge toward the front after a seventh-place start. On lap four, Bailey got around SWinfard, and the two of them caught up to Tomlinson. Bailey took over the lead with three laps left, but he still had SWinfard working hard behind him. On the last lap, Swinfard made his move, taking the win right out of Bailey's hands, and Tomlinson chased them across the wire. Bailey took the overall win with his 1-2 finishes, Tomlinson secured the second overall, and Pochirowski was third overall C ---- • .....r11INTERNATlONAL ~~MDTDRCYCLE CI!3SHDWB. a=_ -4-4,- _'.ZlI,_ ""'....- - ..._,.,,,_ -"""" ,."
