LOOKING BACK
Kenny Roberts wrapped his third 500cc World title at the German
GP (Nürburgring) 30 years ago and was pictured on the cover on his
diminutive Yamaha. Roberts finished out the season 15 points ahead of
Randy Mamola... Hank Scott won his fifth National at the Topeka Gold
Cup Half-Mile... Mark Barnett took the 125cc National Motocross title at
the final round in St. Petersburg, Florida. He finished nine points ahead of
Broc Glover. Danny LaPorte won the 500cc class, but Chuck Sun had
already clinched the title.

SEPTEMBER 10, 1980
A happy Chuck Palmgren was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50
years ago for winning the Nazareth National on the one-eighth-mile dirt
track in Pennsylvania. The next day, the racers headed to Indiana for the
Indy Mile won by Dave Aldana... Bruce Flanders provided our report on
the Bonneville National Speed Trials in Utah. Many records were broken
but not the ultimate speed record for motorcycles. Don Vesco missed the
mark by five mph, going 240.244 mph on a twin-engine Yamaha 700.
