Amateur Nationals Glen Helen Raceway Park A Fistful of Winners By JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 8·9 E very year, to accommodate the visiting racers from allover the West Coast, the folks at Glen Helen Raceway Park have produced the Amateur Nationals on the Thursday and Friday preceding the AHA I25/25Occ Nationals held there. When the Nationals used to be held in May, more than 700 riders from more than 30 states would show up, but since the event was switched to the "final," conflicting schedules with school have cut participation by about 20 percent. The Alessi brothers, Mike and Jeff, unexpectedly showed up for Thursday's program to get in a little practice before the National and, as expected, they were right there at the front, battling the 12Scc Experts. Jesse Casillas, who had been in a close battle with Jeff Alessi at the penultimate round a week earlier in the 125s, hooked up again with Jeff and managed to fend off the younger Alessi for runner-up honors. Stealing the spodight were a fistful of double winners. Leading Thursday'S event was Donnie Kearney, who might have swept the whole show had it not been for his school duties. The teen won all four motos en route to the 125cc Novice Division One and Four-Stroke Novice wins before returning to school on Friday. "We would only let him miss one day, and he chose Thursday," said his father. Picking up the slack was Michael Leib, the 13-year·old Kawasaki rider who also went undefeated, in Supermini and 85cc (12-13) action. His recent move from mountaintop (Lake Arrowhead) to flat land (Menifee) hasn't slowed anything except his injuries; he's been sidelined 13 times in his career. as many as seven times in one season. But his ability to "snovyboard every day of the year" while living at high altitudes may have been a factor in some of those wounds. Intermediate honors had to be shared between Ryan Dungey and Kyle Cunningham. While each won both motos in their separate divisions of the 125cc Intermediates, Dungey rode his Suzuki to a I-I tally in the Four-Stroke Intermediates, while Cunningham matched that score with a Schoolboy sweep on his Kawasaki. Khanh Le of Riverside eked out Beginner honors. After sweeping .the Four-Stroke Beginner win aboard his Yamaha, he saddled his Honda in the 2S0cc Beginner contest and rode to a pair of runner-up finishes, behind Honda rider Christian West and Yamaha rider Nick Thompson, who won the first and second motos, respectively, but each crashed in the other mota and had to settle for second and third overall, respectively. Michel The old and young were represented in the twin-win category, as longtime racer Willy Musgrave collected four checkered flags aboard his Suzuki to ace the Vet and Senior Expert racing, while little Jose Ceja propelled his 50cc KTM to Pee Wee Stock and Modified (7-8) sweeps. One of the tough-luck riders was Travis Broguiere of Wildomar, California. After finishing third in the first moto of the 250cc Novice class - the largest class of the meet, with 37 at the gate - he fell while running second coming out of the Talladega tum at the start, and the field amazingly missed him! His body and bike were only tweaked enough for him to not continue. Kruz Griffith rode a Honda to both mota wins. WILLIAN LONDON, KY, OCT. 2 ocal rider JoT Smith nabbed the holeshot in the first moto of the 250cc Pro at the final round of the East Kentucky Series at Daniel Boone Motocross, chased by Alex Hunter and Kawasaki Team Green/Gateway Cycie/FMF's Justin "Pooh" Sipes. It was only a matter of time before Sipes filed by to take charge of the front position, where he remained the entire moto. Smith finished second, with Hunter claiming third. L 60 The second mota saw Hunter grab the early lead out of the gate, with Sipes and Smith in tow. Sipes rode on Hunter's rear wheel and then pulled beside him. The pair rode in unison for a while around the well-prepped course. Hunter began to pull away from Sipes momentarily, but Sipes didn't let Hunter get too far ahead, and finally he passed Hunter for the lead. Sipes took the mota win and the overall honors for the class. Hunter finished second. Sipes also went I-I in the I25cc Pro class.
