the Montclair Yamaha team captain
wouldn't be able to hold off Hondamountlld Bobby Garrison.
"I just couldn't ride that pace today,"
Davis admitted. "' just could not click at
all; I was so frustrated. Nathan rode really well, and I got behind him, and it wasn't
like he was going that much faster - I was
jUst making too many mistakes."
Garrison passed Davis when the Yamaha
racer ducked Into the pits for one of 5lM!I'aI stops he'd make, not only to get fuel but
to try different suspension settings as well.
"' knew I had to pit a couple laps later,
so I tried to put a little bit of a gap on
him," Garmon said. "I put just enough to
where when I pitted, I had a lead over
him. After that, I was lust trying to keep in
front of him...
Russ Pearson rounded out the top fIVe
after having stopped to notify officials that
Bobby Bonds had crashed and might need
attention. But Bonds wasn't the only one
during the weekend to go down on the
rocky and demanding course. Even
Kiedrowski balled on the final lap, though
he quickiy picked his slightly dented bike
back up and maintained second.
"My hat's off to all the guys who are
here:' Woods said. "The track was rough
and gnarly.
""m Illst trying to get some m0mentum," he added. "I know at the end of the
series, we're going to have 'Ryno' [Ryan
Hughes] coming and a couple other guys,
so I would like to be ready and at least try
to run with these guys and show them
what I'm made of. I am the WORCS
champ, and I continue to hold that plate this
year and, hopefully, next year. I worted I11Y
butt off to get that number-one plate, and
I'm not going to pe it away."

II you're a GP motocross fan, you might
recognize the name Jussi Vehvilalnen, but
most people at Honey Lake were unfamiliar
with the racer from Finland. However, he
decided to try his hand at a WORCS race
and see if he could drum up any interest
from potential sponsors for a run at the
series next year. Riding a KX250 he borrowed from Team Green, he related, "I'm
27 years old now, and I was 17 when I
scored my first World Championship
[motocross1points. I have had my high
moments... then I have also had the low
points, like so many injuries. I'd just like to
do something different.· Of his introduction
into off-road racing. Vehvilainen said, "It
was good fun. Everything went pretty well
except the start. I have been riding fourstrokes the last three years back in Europe.
I kind of forgot how to start on a twostroke. Everything else went pretty all right,
except those rocky sections; they were so
sketchy for me. It was yesterday in the Pro
qualifier that I saw rocils like that for the
first time ever. Back in Finland, I have been
doing some trail riding, but we have more
like deep ruts and trees and roots. That
was the only difficult thing for me, but I
enjoyed it, and what I'd really like to do, I'd
just like to come over for next year and
ride this series. That's my goal."
Tl10ugh he crashed in Saturday's practice,
RIcJcy Dietrich didn't notice anything amiss
about his bike - until he rolled to the line on
Sunday for the race and discovered the front
brake didn't work. With no time before the
start to fIX it, he tried riding a few laps, found
it poindess and headed to the pits to replace
the entire system. Though well down the
field, he recovered and ended up eighth.
