Supermoto Canada National Series Final Round: The Docks - Polson Pier Orange Crush in the Great White North By MARK WOLBRINK TORoNTO,ON,CANADA,AUG.28 en Carlson, Steve Beattie and Shane Scott all won Supermoto Canada National Championships at the Polson Pier Supermoto. Riders from around the world have competed in both amateur and professional classes at a variety of tracks. The fifth and final round was held on the second day of the Toronto X-Fest, on a track that ran through public streets. across a parking lot. and over a floating barge. In the 2S0cc Pro Am final, HMC/ Generations of Sonoma rider john Lewis took his second win of the year in as many attempts. Even though he is not in the chase for the championship, Lewis' presence has definitely been noticed since he first showed up at the Mosport round. In Toronto, Steve Beattie was the only rider in the class that could run at Lewis' pace, and he finished the day in second as the new 250cc Pro Am Champion. Doug Beattie finished in fifth after an early-race getoff essentially took him out of the running in Sunday's main. A solid season of riding earned him the number-two plate in the class. Carlson took the holeshot and led the B 4SOcc Premier class into the infield. Running in second and third. the Beattie brothers were on their large bikes and seemed intent on not being left behind. In fourth was Carlson's teammate David Baffeleuf. For the next couple of laps, the first four positions seemed up for grabs. Carlson protected his line like he was riding the groove on a local short track, while the other three were looking for the passing line. The narrow track didn't offer a lot of chances to pass, so when Baffeleuf found an inside line that got him into second, it seemed destined that he would take the lead. As the laps clicked by, Carlson didn't falter, and Baffeleuf had to settle for second on the day and, as a result, for the year. "I haven't won a championship since I was an amateur - and a hard-fought one, too. David is fast, and all the Canadians are fast. It is always good to win a championship - always!" said a grinning Carlson said after the win. "The series was good. It turned out to be real competitive. A lot of mix-up. There were some big road-race courses and some tighter courses. It was good for everybocly to have the variation. You never knew what to expect. Then, at the last race, to have me and David PHOTO BY TARA BOGARTIGINGERSNAPS going for the championship... I am obViously happy because I won, but it is always good for the series to keep it exCiting for everybody!" jesse Morgan and Shane Scott have seen a lot of each other this year in the Middleweight A class. Except for Morgan's disappointing finish at Trois River early in the year, one of these two have been driving the Middleweight bus at every round in 2005. Sunday's race was no different: The two were fighting for the steering wheel the entire race. Morgan won on Sunday, but when the math was done, Scott had won the championship. Michael Johnson finished third on the year, despite being unable to race the fifth round due to injuries caused by a dirt-track accident earlier in the month. Scoring points in every round this year, Brandon Wade won the Middleweight B Championship. Steve Scharfe won the Novice Lightweight class, finishing ahead of Dan Vanden Boom, who was absent at the final round. Tom Bitz took the Vet Over 3S Championship with a handful of seconds. Emerson Connor and Michael johnson split the Sport and Premier Mini championships. Gill THE DocKS • PoLsoN PlEIl TOIlONTO, ONrAlllO, CANADA RIsws; Auousr 28, 2005 (ROUND 5 Of 51 SPT MINI, I. Most figured that the 16-year-old from southern Oregon would step in and make an immediate impact. and they were right: Hill won four out of (our motos en route to his I25cc and 2SOcc-elass wins. Two other Oregonians played key roles in the Pro classes, as Ty "Tiger" Lacey and the second rookie Pro, Kevin Rookstool, were the riders who stuck closest to Hill. Hill's first-ever Pro-class win came in the 125cc class. Lacey and HiiI shared holeshot honors in the first moto. Lacey put a wheel ahead of Hill heading up Horsepower Hill, but Hill's YZF darted past Lacey's Honda, and Hill wouldn't be challenged from that point on. Rookstool was also impressive: The former minicycle speedster and top Amateur performer ran third to Hill and Lacey, where he'd finish, ahead of Washington's Miles Warren and Oregonians Adam Metzler and Rory Sullivan, who completed the top six. "That's one fast Yamaha," Lacey said of Hill's machine. "My bike's really fast. but he [Hill] pretty much new past me on the uphill, and I couldn't catch him after that. The kid's really impressive and has a lot of potential." O S6 Moto two saw the Suzuki-mounted Rookstool and Lacey holding down the top two positions. Hill quickly pounced upon Lacey and then spent the remainder of the opening lap chasing down Rookstool. Hill got by the rider from Klamath Falls and eventually placed 12 seconds on Lacey at the finish. Lacey's 2-2 finishes earned the 22-year-old second overall, ahead of Rookstool (3-3), Warren (4-4) and Metzler (5-5) in the 17-rider field. Another dual-class winner on the day was Washington's Chris Johnson. The Team Green rider posted the overall 125cc and Before The Hill B victories, both via I-I routs. johnson had tough competition from KTM rider Jon Neimi in the second 12Scc B moto, but in the end, Johnson pulled away from the local rider and won by a comfortable margin. A large field of Women riders was on hand, with Yamaha-mounted jill Carter taking the overall win via I-I placings. In both motos, Carter had to overtake Honda rider jenni Wilson, who placed 2-2 to trail Carter but finished ahead of Michelle Coblentz (3-3). Dan Moore has been the dominant figure in the Over 25 and Over 30 Pro classes, but on this day, Moore would collect only one win, the Over 30 victory, ahead of Don Bisceglia and jason McCormick. Moore garnered large leads in both Over 25 motos, but a crash in mota one and a flat rear tire in the second moto gave Nick Foister the overall win, ahead of Bisceglia, oaOBER 5,2005 • CYCLE NEWS Moore, Jason Matthews and former National number holder Mike Hamness. eN WASHOUGAL MOTOCROSS PARK WASHOUGAL, WASHINGTON REsuLTS: AUGUST 28, 2005 (ROUND 5 OF 5) S I (4-S) OIL-IN): I.
