MX West Fall Series Round 5: Champion Speedway Garnett Glides Away By ROBERT BEAUPRE CARSON CITY, NV, SEPT. 18 t's not every weekend that Steve Garnett tums up in the Pro class in northern Nevada. but when he does, he is his usual, I formidable self. At round five of the MX West Fall Series, Gar- nett powered to a win in the Over 30 Pro ranks and backed that up with a solid second in the 250cc Pro class. Garnett began his day at the front of the pack when he nabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc moto and stretched a slight lead on the opening lap. Garnett battled with J,L Bin and Tommy Jean in the first half of the race before settling into the third spot, following moto winner Bin and runner-up Jean to the line. Garnett suffered a midpack swt in the second outing and had to fight his way into third - a spot he held until the second-to-Iast jump of the moto, where Jim Bryant threw away the second spot with a fall just one rum away from the finish line. Garnett took over the position and followed ~I winner Bin (I-I) to the line to claim second ~I with a 3-2 score. Steve Marty earned third with a 5-3 posting, and Bryant recovered to claim fourth via a 4-4 tally. Garnett's Over 30 victory came with a I-I score that only looked in doubt (or a few moments in the second moto. Following a mistake by Garnett, first-moto second-place finisher Bob DeMars took over the lead for a while before Garnett regained his composure and charged back to take the win. DeMars held on for second. When asked what helps him stay in shape while not racing. Garnett was candid. "Coors light," he joked. "Actually, I don't really do any training: I just show up and ride now and then. I've always been good off the couch. Age is getting to me, t!lough. I've got to start working a little harder at it." In the I25cc Pro class, Bitz looked ready to complement his 250cc performance with another win after taking the fim-moto victory and establishing a solid lead in the second moto. But things quickly came unraveled late in the moto when Bitt faltered suddenly, allowing second-place rider Jean into the lead. Bin rode in the second spot momentarily, only to pull off before the end of the lap. Jean went on to score the overall win, ahead of Bryant. In Intermediate racing, Aron Harvey returned from a broken wrist suffered at Loretta Lynn's to take another commanding sweep of the 125cc Intermediate. 250cc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes. And just behind Harvey, fellow Intermediates lach Fields and Chris Grant tumed in impressive rides to each claim second-place postings in the 250cc Intermediate and Schoolboy results, respectively.
