Shogun Motorsports CMRA Mini Endurance Series Round 5: Hallett Motor Racing Circuit PHOTO BY SHAN MOORE Team K&N Makes It Five Out of Five! By SHAN MOORE HALLETT, OK, AUG. 21 A fter suffering mechanical problems at the Mmidway point of the two-hour race, Team K&N came from two laps down to win round fIVe of the Shogun Motorspons Mini Endurance Series, held at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. The win was the fifth of the year for Team K&N, keeping their perfect record intact for the 200S season. RS Express finished second ClVerall, just I I seconds behind Team K&N, and extended its narrow gap in the overall series points standings ClVer Team jesus to 12 points with the finish - the two teams currently sit in second and third overall in the standings. At the start, Sam McDonald put the Team K&N Yamaha TZ85 into the lead, and by the end of the first hour he had built nearly a oneminute lead over Derek Wagnon of Team jesus and Chuck Ergle of RS Express, who had spent most of the first hour in a wild dice over the second-place position. However, during Team K&N's pit stop, which included a gas-tank swap, a fuel leak developed that soaked the air filter and fouled the spark plug. By the time the problem was corrected, Team K&N, now with Gruy on board, was two laps down from the leaders. "About halfway into my stint, Sam [McDonald) gave me a board saying 'minus 55 seconds with 30 minutes left', so I just put my head behind the bubble and started carrying a little more corner speed," said Gruy. "The main thing I changed was being more aggressive through traffic." Gruy's strategy was just enough to get the job done, as he passed RS Express on the final lap to secure the win. Team Jesus finished on the same lap as Team K&N and RS Express to grab the third-place position. while Team Sidewinder and Tacos Bob"s Racing rounded out the top five in the ClVerall standings and the Fonnula Four division. Team Extreme Powerspons finished sixth AMA Southern All-Stars MX Tour Round 12: Laurel Mountain Motorsports Boruff, Barnes Lofty at Laurel Mountain MX By GARY CRIDER MADISONVILLi, TN, AUG. 21 aurel Mountain MX is one of three new L tracks that were added to the AMA South- ern All-Stars MX Tour for this season. Round 12 in the IS-round series was Laurel Moun- tain's Southern All-Stars series debut. Designed and built by fonner National MX Champion Mark Barnett with help from Glenn Bates, the track's layout is punctuated by numerous breathtaking elevation changes. Nearly all of its 1.2-mile length is visible from the grandstands. The surface here is a variation on the red-day theme, but, as race announcer Mark Steventon insisted, "It's not red, it's chocolate-colored!" In any case, despite the high temperatures and relentless sun, the track surface held up fine all day, and there was very little dust, thanks, in part, to the track crew's good timing with their watering and plowing strategies. Morgan Gentry, who won the Talent Show competition at Loretta's this year, was on hand and signaled the start of the day's racing with a stirring rendition of our national anthem. It did not seem to matter to Jon Boruff whether he started rnidpack or at the front: The FenceprosjJim's CyclesjMoto Planetbacked rider was first at the flag each time out in both A divisions and in the Over 25 class. Brandon Barnes grabbed the holeshot and led from start to finish in the opening 125cc C 44 mota. Moto two was completely different, as the SYDjScott!Vortex-backed Barnes got under way in about 10th. Seemingly unfazed by traffic, Bames mounted a charge and came away with a perfect score. Top contender Alix Freeman suffered a spill in the opening moto, and his eventual 24-2 score held him to 13th overall. John Mclaughlin finished third in moto one and was leading the second moto when he crashed into the DNF column, Series leader Levi Long earned the silver via consistent 2-3 finishes. Barnes was also entered in the Unlimited (16-24) class, in which he matched wheels with an assortment of A and B riders. Barnes earned the final podium slot, behind Brandon Belcher and Taylor Reilly. Capitol Cycle teammates Taylor Johnson and Derek Rogers, both Suzuki-mounted, matched wheels in four motos of fast and furious action. In the Supermini class, Johnson and Rogers diced closely, but johnson came away with both moto wins. In their 85cc (14-15) debate, Johnson won the opening moto, but Rogers held on to win moto two, garnering the overall honors over Johnson in a points tie. The 85cc (9-13) and (12-13) divisions also saw plenty of close racing, as Matt Bell and Sean Cunningham shared the moto wins and came away with a moto win apiece. Series leader Cody Haney was third in the 85cc (12-13) class. Gregory Roberts, on the comeback trail from injuries, won three motos on the day, SEPTEMBER 28, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS Team K&N'.
