STTARS/3 Brothers/KTM Supermoto Series Round 6: Grange Forces of Nature: Rain, Lightning, Bagnis By JAMEY BLUNT APPLE VAUEY, CA, JULY 24 ot the threat of rain, not lightning, not the triple-digit temperatures, not even flashflood warnings could keep riders away from Grange. Well, at least 140 entries' worth of them. For those who made the trek to Grange, it was well worthwhile, as round six of the STTARS Series provided some exceptional racing. Yes, it did rain; yes, there was lightning; no, there were no flash floods; and the temperatures, though on the warm side, were not as hot as had been expected. There were some top-rate performances turned in from the "Flying Garcia Brothers," Frankie and Jess. The first was from Frankie, in the 2SOcc class, as he not only took the heatrace win but hammered the competition in the eight-lap main to cruise to victory by more than 18 seconds, in another ZIP code from the rest of the roeld. Things weren't quite so easy for Frankie's younger brother Jess in the Mini-Moto 85cc class. Torrance, California's Tyler Odom was N knocking on Jess' door the whole way but just couldn't find a way around. Jess Garcia, who has all but sewn up the 85cc title, rode flawlessly to the victory; he had to, or Odom would have gotten by. Another great ride came from Matt Barney in the Vet Over 35 class, as he topped Steve Isenhower and Dante Herrero. It looked like a double win was in the cards for Barney until he threw it away in the Intermediate final. Nonetheless, Barney has emerged as a real threat. GP HusqvarnaJDunlop rider Leonardo ·Pucho" Bagnis came to Grange with a stable of machines for the 450cc and Open classes. The 450cc main was a bit of a cakewalk for Bagnis, as Cameron Welsh, Kevin Vossen and Frankie Garcia gave chase. But in the Open Expert main, Welsh came to the line focused and ready to race. (Note to sponsors: Someone needs to take a hard look at Mr. Welsh, as one wonders wihat he is capable of on first-rate machinery.) Welsh nailed the start and led into Jason's Comer (a.k.a. turn one), followed by Bagnis, American Honda's Rick Washougal Amateur Days Washougal Motocross Park WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 28·30 A round 2000 riders from all across the UnitI""'\ed States and Canada were on hand (or the 25th annual Washougal Amateur Days, each one getting a chance to ride one of the country's most challenging and scenic motocross courses. Of those riders, Utah's Gray Davenport and Washingtonians Ricky Dietrich and Dan Moore were the cream of the crop in the A classes. Davenport, who made the trek from Lehi, Utah, split moto wins wTth Dietrich in Thursday's I25cc A class and won overall after placing first in moto one and then trailing Dietrich to the finish in moto two. Rookie A rider Sam DeAtley. who was making his Pro-class debut, finished second to Davenport in moto one. DeAdey, known as a fast starter, proved he's ready for prime time with his second-place finish in the moto. although he had problems in moto two and finished 16th. Dietrich won moto two and, coupled with his fourth-place finish in mota one, that netted second overall, ahead of Ross Johnson (3-6), Jake Cartwright (5-5) and Californian Nick Davis (10-3). Dietrich, who has chalked up some impressive performances during the WORCS events this year, fared much better in the 2SOcc A class that same day. Dietrich won both motos finishing ahead of DeAdey and Leighton Lillie - to end his day on a positive note. Pearce was raw meat and Ross was a Doberman. as he was all over Pearce, not wanting Welsh and Bagnis to get away at the front. Two laps in, it was easy to tell this was to be Welsh's best ride to date; he meant business and was not intimidated by Bagnis. As they crossed the stripe, Welsh and Bagnis had a two-second gap over Ross, who had moved up to third, and Pearce was now fourth. Three laps in, Welsh put in a one-minuteand-5.23-second lap, with Bagnis hounding him but unable to find a way around. Back in third, Oxtar Boots' Ross was closing on the leaders. On lap five, Bagnis. using his experience, stuck a wheel under Welsh in the left-hander after exiting the dirt section and took over at the front. Once clear, Bagnis went on to the victory, leaving Welsh to deal with Ross, which he did. Pearce came home fourth on the only two-stroke, with Garcia fifth on a 250cc machine. CN second to Dietrich in mota two and finished second overall. Californian Carter Gurnee trailed Dietrich and DeAtley in moto two, although a 10th-place first-mota finish dropped him to sixth overall, behind Dietrich, DeAtley, Lillie (2-6), Arik Swan (5--4) and Davis (4-5). Gurnee turned in a creditable performance in the Over 30 A class. finishing ahead of Moore in the second moto. Gurnee, however, couldn't repeat that performance in moto two and placed 20th, thwarting his chances overall. Moore's 2-1 finishes gave the former National number holder the win, ahead of Jamie Munson and Dustin Bloomfield, to cap off his two-class sweep (after he also won the Over 25 A class). The 12Scc C class numbered nearly 200 entrants and were split into four divisions of 45 riders each. Californians won two of those four divisions, as Will McDonough and James Velasco were victorious in the first two. Idaho's Kyle Evans and Washington's Josh Jackson won the other divisions. Just shy of 100 riders made up two Supermini classes, with Oregon's William See and Utah's Dacoda Sorochuk splitting mota wins in the competitive class for 12- to IS-yearolds. It was See. though. who won the second moto and the overall. Montana's Levin Baumann (4-2) finished second, ahead of Kevin Knight (5-3), Sorochuk (1-7) and Bradley Hillman (6-5).
