Auburn Track Championship Fast Fridays Speedway Venegas Victorious at Auburn Track Championship By M. SOBER AUBURN,CA,AUG.26 M ultiple-time ICE Racing Champion Charlie "The Edge" Venegas won the Auburn Track Championship with a near-perfect 14-point score. Venegas won his first four heats and then cruised to victory with a solid second-place heat finish in round five, behind Bart Bast's third straight win. Bast's win pushed him into a tie with Bryan Yarrow at 13 points apiece. Yarrow won the subsequent run up to finish in second overall. Tommy Hedden finished in fourth with 12 points, and Chad Felicio was fifth with I I. It was Venegas' second Fast Fridays Championship, the first one coming in 1998. In the opening round, the track was a bit rough and heavy in an attempt to survive the night's sheer volume of scheduled races. With run-offs and restarts, the number would approach 50 before the night was over. Greg Hooten Jr., Venegas, Yarrow and Tommy Hedden took the three-point victories in the first round of four heats. In round two, Chad Felicio, Venegas, Chris Kerr and T.J. "The Menace" Fowler claimed the wins. In round three, Venegas, Bast, Yarrow and Nate Perkins took the wins, ahead of second-place finishers Kerr, Felicia, Hedden and Hooton. After three of five rounds, Venegas held a one-point lead over Yarrow and a two-point lead ahead of Bast and Hedden. Bast opened up the fourth round with a victory over Hedden, and then all hell broke loose in the next heat. Fowler wildly lost control of his bike in turn two, and it launched off the track, clearing the four-foot-high plywood fence and entering the pits. The heat was never restarted, and front-runner Perkins was awarded the win, while Fowler had the rest of the night off. Felicia won the next heat, and Venegas then finished off the round with his fourth straight triumph of the evening, which included an impressive lap-three outside pass of pole sitter Yarrow. In the final round, Matt Browne got his first win, and Yarrow kept the pressure on Venegas, winning his last heat with a win from the pole, over Billy Hiles. It came down to Bast taking points out of Venegas' lead, which he did, but when Venegas held Dustin Schroeder off to claim second place, the championship was his. In the Division One championship, Josh West drew the pole and ran off with the clear victory over Kell Kerrigan, Rachelle Kerr and Mike Achilles. Cory Barringer took the early lead in the Division Three championship and then held on to beat Danny Poli by mere inches. RESULTS C'SH'" I. Charlie Veneg.u O.w) (14 pIS); 2.
