Round 2: 12 Hours of Glen Helen
Gosselaar, Mahoney &
Stapleton Top 12 Hours

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 2
I
ast March, at the Six Hou~ of Glen Helen
Lorace, Mark Tilley was leading on lap two
when he centerpunched a course marshal's
quad when he chose the wrong route in a section that had been poorly bannered. It cost his
team the lead, but he and his teammates Mike
Childress and Eric McKenna (Mark's uncle)
managed to regain their pace and make a successful comeback to win.
At the 12 Hours of Glen Helen, with
McKenna replaced by pro motocrosser Sean
Collier, the trio came in as pre-race favorites,
with Tolley repeating as the first-leg and first-lap
leader, prevailing by nearly a half-minute when
the field negotiated the 8-mile cou~, again codesigned by Gary Jones and Ron Lawson.
"We really want to win this one," said
Childress. "I don't think anyone has won all
three [the Six Hou~, 12 Hou~ and 24 Hou~l
in the same year, and we want to be the fi~t."
However, coming out of the wash on lap
two. Tilley went into a rut, and his chain got
derailed. Pitting in sixth, he turned it over to
Collier, confident that his squad could make
another comeback.
The Honda-mounted trio of Daryl Ecklund,
Shane Smith & Robert Barnum led from lap
two to lap five, when Ecklund missed the pit
entrance just after the finish line and continued
down the course about 200 yards before
pulling off and into the pits at the far end the
wrong end. (They could have been disqualified
but were onty issued a stem warning.)
Another Honda squad, comprised of Tommy
Harrison, Jimmy Fishback & Greg Schnell, took
over for two laps, followed closely by another
Honda team - Todd Gosselaar, Denis Stapleton
& Derik Mahoney. That team's chances for a
win at round one had been destroyed when
Gosselaar endoed down a hill; the team
eventually finished a respectable fourth. On this
day, riding smarter and more controlled,
Gosselaar's team took over about 90 minutes in
and began steadily increasing their lead.
Meanwhile, Collier', team was rebounding,
and by midway they had marched into a battle
for runner-up.
Back and forth for several hours, Harrison's
team and Collier's team swapped second. With
about two hou~ left, Tilley began to pull away
- and to chase after the leade~, whose nearly
six-minute advantage began to evaporate.
At the end of lap 42, the gap was only 1:45,
and Tolley and Childress considered letting Collier
finish out the race. When he pitted, Collier was
just I :07 behind Mahoney; without much
pe~uasion, Collier topped off and left. There
were four laps left. Could he keep up that pace?
When Mahoney pitted after lap 44, he had a
I:23 advantage. When Stapleton appeared and
lap 4S was done, Collier was now obviously
struggling, I:40 back. Exhausted, he turned it
over to Tilley.
Stapleton put it on cruise control. Tilley
attacked as hard as he could, but the gap was
I:43 when the white flag appeared. Gosselaar
was all smiles as Stapleton crossed for the win,
making up for their 6 Hou~ disappointment. CN
