PHOTO BY JT MOTORSPORTS LLC Dunlop/WERA National EndurancE SErIEs Round S: Las Vegas Motor Speedway Team Veloci~: Just Doing It Right By DAN SCHMITT lAS VEGAS, NV, JUNE 25 "The racers of the Dunlop/WERA National I Endurance Series received a break in the weather, as temperatures at las Vegas Motor Speedway hovered in the mid-90s for the fifth round of this series. A dry easterly breeze came across this 1.7S-mile roadcourse as the green nag new at 12:30. Tray Batey, on the Ves- rah Suzuki, overcame the holeshot of Ben Thompson, on the Red Star Vamaha R6. Team Velocity Racing, Advanced Kawasaki and Team Eclipse battled for third during the opening laps. Batey continued his charge during the first hour, gaining a one-lap advantage over Team Velocity and Red Star. Eighty-fIVe minutes into the race, and after a quick pit stop to change both tires and refuel, Batey turned the Vesrah Suzuki over to John Jacobi. However, after a few laps, jacobi had a problem on the back stretch, as the engine died. Quickly, jacobi began the long push back toward the pits, while Red Star took the lead, with Team Velocity second. Dalke Motorsports was on the Kawasaki, Bell's Amchu Racing and Dixie Mar... Blue Ridge Performance, on the 4&6 Racing SV6S0, had a lock on the Ughtweight Superbike class, running 13th overall. With 90 minutes to go, Vesrah Suzuki had another problem. This time the bike died across from the pits, with Mark Junge on board. Junge wanted to push it across the track. but the officials made him wait (or the track truck. As Team Velocity gained S5 seconds over Red Star for the lead, the Vesrah crew was busy changing the gas tank. The first time they stopped, it was only a fuse; this time, the fuel pump had given out. Dixie Mafia made the big push to fifth overall and grabbed the lead in the Middleweight Superstock class. Blue Ridge Performance held a two-lap lead over MS Racing II. During the final hour, Red Star lost its engine and was out of the race. Advanced Kawasaki made the big push to catch Team Velocity for the overall and Heavyweight Superstock victories but could not make up the two-lap disadvantage. With steady riding, Bell's Arnchu Racing took third overall and the Heavyweight Superbike win. The two charge to third overall and first in the teammates, Army Of Darkness and Dixie Middleweight Superstock class. One lap back, the battle for fourth heated up among Advanced Mafia, ran the last 20 laps together and took home both the Middleweight Superbike and Michelln/WERA National Challenge Series Round 5: Las Vegas Motor SpEedway Batey in a Nail-Biter By DAN SCHMIn lAS VEGAS, NV, JUNE 26 The temperatures at Las Vegas Motor I Speedway stayed in the mid-90s (or Sunday's event, with a slight breeze and clear air, with no smoke from the local brush fires. West Coast WERA hero Dale Kieffer wasted no time charging to the front of the Open Superstock final at the drop of the green nag. Ben Thompson, who honed his riding skills on the Alaskan tundra, ran second, with Mark Junge in third. john Chen had his Suzuki in fourth, and Michael Beck ran fifth. Thompson made it a two-man battle to the end, but he just couldn't get by Kieffer, who took the victory. No matter where junge tried to pass, Chris Siglin had him covered in the 600cc Expert Superstock race. junge's teammate john jacobi followed closely, with josh Herrin and David Weber contesting fourth. jacobi had a tougher time of it in the 7S0cc Superstock Expert final, as Trey Batey ran to the front, with Thompson second. Superstock wins. "The key to our success is putting ourselves in the poSition to win," said Chuck Ivey, owner of (and rider for) the victorious Team Velocity Racing Yamaha RI. "Seeing that we are on a Superstock bike with that class' restrictions, we have to ride hard, we try to make no mistakes, and we try to ride consistent - just at doing it right." lAs lAs VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY VEGAS, NEVADA RESULTS: JUNE 25, 2005 (ROUND 5) O/A: I. As Batey took the win with a rew seconds to spare, Siglin came up short in his challenge to Thompson for second. john lawson had the hot hand in the Open Superstock Novice final, beating Tony Palarie and j.B. Layman by rIVe seconds. In the 600cc Superstock Novice race, Nick Scoggins beat back the challenges of Layman and Curtis Cash to take home the gold cup. Layman took the 7S0cc Superstock Novice win. over Mitch Ward and Palarie. Palarie came back to win the 750cc Superbike Novice final, over Layman and Walter Wilson. In was a nail-biter in the Heavyweight Twins Superstock class, as jack Pfeifer had his Aprilia 1000 on the heels of Batey's Suzuki SVIOOO. Pfeifer snatched the lead a few times around this twisty I.7S-mile roadcourse, but on the lap that counted, Batey was there. jason DiSalvo, who came out to see some of his old WERA friends and test his factory Yamahas, finally put on a show in the 600cc Superbike Expert final, as he charged from the back of the pack to finally catch Herrin at the halfway point. These two riders battled for the next four laps, and DiSalvo pulled off at the end to let Herrin take the nag. Thompson held off the charge from DiSalvo to take an honest victory in the 750cc Superbike final.
