PHOTO BY MIKE BASSO Speedway Olympic Costa Mesa Speedway Flyin' Mike's Olympian -in Costa Mesa! By ELAINE JONES COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 25 " FIYin' Mike" Faria, aboard a new bike, captured the Speedway Olympic at Costa Mesa Speedway on Saturday night. Early in the evening. he mentioned that the bike was new and that he had some things to work out with it. but it sure looked like it was working just fine. It was a championship format: three rounds of Scratch racing, with the top 10 advancing to the semis. Scoring was done 4-3-2-1-0. Chris Kerr, Chris Manchester, Shawn Harmatiuk and Faria scored wins in the opening round. When round two rolled around, it was looking like a repeat of round one, as Harmatiuk and Manchester both came away with their second wins of the night and perfect scores. Buck Blair came away the top dog in the third heat of round two, and he had to fight Charlie "The Edge" Venegas all the way to the checkered. Faria dosed out the second round by keeping his perfect score alive. Round three is the "do or die" round, as riders try to get precious points to make it to the semis. Manchester was on fire as he started things off, and Faria, not to be outdone, got his hat trick as well. Tommy Hedden from Northern California had been moving up the ladder, and he got the win when it counted. Blair finished off the heat racing by getting his second win of the night. The points were tallied, and they loaded in for the first semi. Faria was on the pole, with Kerr in two; on the outside were Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell and "Cowboy" Bobby Krips. (Harmatiuk was scheduled for the semi, but an accident in the third round left him without a bike.) The gate went to Faria, with McConnell getting out second. Kerr was on the move, and when the white flag came out, he took over the second spot. Krlps was also able to get by, but it would be Faria and Kerr going to the main and Krips and McConnell heading to the last-chance qualifier. The second semi was a battle for second, as Manchester, coming off the pole, was gone. Venegas and Blair battled to the checkers, with the nod going to Venegas. He would advance to the main with Manchester, while Blair and Hedden got ready for the LCQ. Blair got the pole as they lined up for the LCQ, and that was all he needed to cement his place in the main. They rolled to the line for the main. Faria was on the pole, with Venegas in two and Kerr in three. On the outside, it was Blair and Manchester. The light came on, the tape came up, and it was a drag race to the first corner. Faria not only got the corner, he got through it and came out of two on top and running strong. Kerr was not going quietfy into that good night; Mike Faria (leading) topped the Speedway Olympic at Casta Mesa Speedway. he tried everything he knew to find a chink in Faria's armor - but Mike's was a flawless ride, and Kerr would have to settle for second. On back, it was Manchester, Blair and Venegas. TIm Gomez made his debut at Costa Mesa a good one, winning the Support main over Steve Murray and Chris Metoyer. The event attracted 250 entries per day for the two rounds of Vintage and Modem racing. Vintage veteran David Roper dominated the Grand Prix classes, going fIVe for six, with Philip Turkington keeping Roper from logging a perfect weekend by taking the win in Sunday's 2SOcc GP race. Otherwise, Roper was first to the flag in that class on Saturday, as wei! as in both days' rounds of 3SOcc GP (on an ex-Cal Rayborn factory Hariey Sprint) and SOOcc Premier (on a Manx-Norton). Saturday's 250cc GP race was one of the weekend's best: a three-way contest involving Roper, on a 1966 Aermachi; AHRMA newcomer Robbie NigI, aboard a 1964 Ducati; and Jonathan White, on a '66 Ducati. Starting in the second wave, the three quickly began to move through traffic, Roper and Nigl swapping the lead and White moving up past Roper into second on at least one OCC3SJon. As the race wore on, Roper and Nigel began to put a gap on White as their own battle heated up. The pair circulated the last lap virtually side by side, but at the finish line is was Roper with the win. Nigl's 2S0cc GP race on Sunday ended with a ride to the hOSpital (only minor dents and dings) after he collided with another competitor, but he was the dominant force in the Modern-bike classes for most of the weekend. He rode a BCM-backed Ducati 999R to victory on both days over Ducati 749R-mounted Mark Hatten in Battle Of Twins Formula One and Saturday's Sound Of Thunder. In Nigl's absence, Hatten got Sunday's Thunder win, but it didn't come easily, as Hatten and Robert Mclendon III swapped the lead numerous times throughout the eight-lap race. McLendon, meanwhile, was a player on both days in the Triumph Thruxton Cup Challenge. The Triumph-sponsored spec class has quickly become one of the highlights of the AHRMA program, attracting former AMA Grand National Champions Jay Springsteen and Gary Nixon to this western Pennsytvania venue. William Stranahan held the point position all through Saturday's race, with Tim Joyce and Springsteen hot on his heels and going back and forth taking turns holding second spot. McLendon was a close fourth, ahead of Nixon. Joyce encountered trouble on the T 54 AUGUST 24, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS seventh of the 10 laps, moving McLendon up to finish third, behind race winner Stranahan and runner-up Springsteen. Joyce came back to win the Sunday race, ahead of McLendon, with Springsteen third, ahead of Stranahan. Nixon ended up sixth, behind Jeff Hinds, who was fifth both times.
