Oregon Motocross Portlana International Raceway Waite, Nessel Wage War By JUSTIN WHARTON PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 4 S peedster.; Andrew Nessel, Ryder Waite, Cody Smith and Cody Herzog have been the top dogs in the 50cc (7-8) class this year. Nessel has been winning most of the battles so far this year, but after he took several weeks off, Waite and Smith were ready for him. In the first moto, Herzog nailed the holeshot. Nessel and Waite soon shot around him and waged an amazing battle. Usually, if Nessel gets out into a good lead, then there's no stopping him. This time. though. Waite wasn't going to give it to him. Lap after lap, Waite hounded Nessel, and the two riders were clocking some impressive lap times. When the checkers came oUt, it was Nessel with the win. just ahead of Waite and Herzog. In the second moto, Herzog once again got an outstanding start. but once again Nessel and Waite shot around him. This time. the battle between the Pollni-mounted Waite and the Cobra-mounted Nessel got even more interesting. The spectators were literally on their feet and cheering as Waite made the pass on Nessel (or the lead. They got even more excited when Nessel retaliated and battled his way back into the lead. This game of cat-and-mouse went on until the last lap. when Waite hit a bump wrong and almost went over the bars. Nessel ended up with the win, followed by Waite, Herzog, Jordan Lytle and Jack Fowler. Nessel (I-I) took the overall win, followed by Waite (2-2), Herzog (3-3), Lytle (5-4) and Fowler (6-5). Former 65cc stars Steele Angle and Mike Pontious raced together for the first time on 85cc machines. The result was rather interesting. In the combined 85cc Junior and 85cc Intermediate race, it was Pontious taking both moto wins over Angle, as it seemed to take Angle a while to work up to the larger jumps. Winning the Junior class was Yamaha-mounted Trevor Billups (I-I), followed by Corey Theisen (4-2), Neal Burres (3-3), Brody Thom (2-4), and Mason Holt (5-5). In the Supermini class. Pontious won the first mota. but Angle took the win in the second moto after Pontious crashed with Chris Kolde early in the moto. Angle (2-1) took the overall win, with Pontious (1-3), Kolde (3-2), Billups (4-4) and Burres (5-5) in tow. RESULTS so (4-6): I. Ryan Manin (Cob): 2. Christian Ron (KTM); J. Trent Preheim (KTM); 1.
