PHOTO BY JOHN BETHEA Yamaha Dealers Series Round 3: Glen Helen Raceway Park I can do it. I want to giye it 100 percent. I'll go to the last six Nationals and come out swinging and riding like I know how to ride." eN One-Man British Invasion By JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 19 The Union jack worn by Britain's 17-yearI old Adam Chatfield has been shown to the regulars at Glen Helen Raceway quite a bit in recent months, and it was seen very clearly on this day, displayed on the teen's back, as he pulled off two Expert-class wins and added a third-place finish in the 125cc Expert class as the Yamaha Dealers Series reached its midway point, on a day many series contenders had skipped to race Mammoth Mountain. Chatfield might not be here in America much longer. "I plan on going back home soon to visit my mum, and I might ride a World GP if I get a chance [back in Europe]," said Chatfield, who'd planned on visiting America for only three months, and that period is already up. However, if he is still around to contest some of our outdoor Nationals. don't be surprised. He's already impressed folks at Honda, which is now supplying him with factory support. Chatfield's biggest opposition in recent weeks and again on this weekend carne from St. George, Utah's Devin Sullivan, another 17-yearold who has recently moved up to the Expert ranks but who won't be chasing any National events soon; his 18th birthday won't be until january, and he still has another year of high school. The B student has no plans for college; what he plans now is to race as often as possible. On this day, Sullivan's I 25cc ride was a 2-year-old backup bike, because his newer 250F blew up on Saturday, and he drifted back as the race went on, eventually finishing fifth overall. However, Chatfield and Sullivan's first 250cc moto had the crowd wowed, especially on the last lap, when leader Sullivan had to fend off Chatfield's repeated attempts to take the lead. wHe's a fighter," Sullivan said of his opponent. '" never look back, though; , just listen and try to protect my lines." Several times, Chatfield poked his wheel alongside, trying to nudge his way by. "These four-Iappers," the Brit said. "It takes me three laps just to get into it, and I don't get the best of starts, so I have to pass a few guys." NeYertheless, Chatfield came back and won the second moto for the overall. Sullivan floundered in that second 250cc and dropped to third overall, behind veteran Terry Fowler (3-2). (Fowler also scored some first· place points for his john Burr Cycles sponsors with a Vet Expert sweep.) Chatfield scored the Four-Stroke Expert victory with a sweep. Chatfield's only defeat came at the hands of fellow JBC Honda rider Gerrit Ordelman, who dominated both 125cc Expert motos. Ordelman is preparing for the West Coast swing of the 125cc Nationals, and his sweep here pumped up his spirits. "I have to make a decision and commit, the 24-year-old admitted.
