Outlaw Motorcycle Races Presented by The Shop Ventura Raceway Brown, Fast Eddie Hustle Up Outlaw Wins By JAMEY BLUNT VENTURA, CA, JUNE 25 ne hundred fifty-three entrants made their way to Sea Side Park, home to Ventura Raceway at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, site of the 13th annual Outlaw Motorcycle Races Presented by The Shop. For 13 years, Dave Hansen (owner of The Shop) and Jim Naylor (the power at Ventura) have gonen together once a year for a motorcycle extravaganza. By 6 p.m., 19 heat races had run to completion, the stage was set, and the first of 17 main events rolled to the line. If you love old-vintage motorcycles, the Dinosaur class would make you drool, with vintage Indians from 1936 to 1940 and an old 1949 Harley-Davidson thrown in for fun. "Fast Eddie" Castro of speedway fame was the odds-on favorite, but Dodge Brothers brought in George Walls from Illinois to shake things up. On the first start, Castro hit the ground between turns one and two, causing a restart. On the next attempt, Walls was the one who O went down, bringing out the red flag again. The third time was the charm, and Castro was up to the task, posting a 16.86-second lap no one could match as he disappeared for the victory over Walls. Tom Hensley rode better than ever to take the final podium spot. The 20-lap Pro main had 14 riders staged, with (astest qualifier David Brown of Brown's Cycles on pole, but it was Bill Kolkman who shot to the front off the line, followed by Brown. However, Brown got the drive out of turn two and made a run on Kolkman to take over up front entering turn three, and he never looked back. That's not to say it wasn't a race, because it was. Mike Vital who's been fast of late, ran third, as the hay bales collected josh Travis and Kayl Kolkman in turn four, bringing out the red flag. On the restart, Vital was the leader, followed by Brown and WCR Racing/Fastrack Graphic's jim Rosa. Brown and Rosa both made short work of Vital, only to have jeff Eklund and Kenny Malaguarnero both go down on the back straight, causing another red flag. PHOTO BY JAMEY BlUNT The third restart was a carbon copy of the second. but by the one-lap mark Brown led, Rosa was second, Vital ran third. Simi Valley Kawasaki's John Lundgren was fourth, and Bill Kolkman was fifth. For the first five laps, Rosa pressured Brown and even took the lead a few times, but this only motivated Brown, as he put his head down and turned his fastest lap of 15.96 seconds as he began to inch away from Rosa. By the halfway point, Vital was fading. Bill Kolkman was on the move, and by lap 15 he had taken second from Rosa. But Rosa wasn't finished yet: With three laps to go, he pushed back past Bill Kolkman for second. At the finish, Brown was gone. with Rosa second, Bill Kolkman third, Kayl Kolkman fourth, Vital fifth, Lundgren sixth, and jim Ottele coming home in seventh. On a side note, Castro had the overall fastest lap of the night on a vintage two-valve speedway bike, at 15.78 seconds. eN VENTURA RACEWAY VENTURA, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: JUNE 25, 2005 DINO, I.
