One-Man British Invasion

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 19
The Union jack worn by Britain's 17-yearI old Adam Chatfield has been shown to the
regulars at Glen Helen Raceway quite a bit in
recent months, and it was seen very clearly on
this day, displayed on the teen's back, as he
pulled off two Expert-class wins and added a
third-place finish in the 125cc Expert class as
the Yamaha Dealers Series reached its midway
point, on a day many series contenders had
skipped to race Mammoth Mountain.
Chatfield might not be here in America
much longer.
"I plan on going back home soon to visit my
mum, and I might ride a World GP if I get a
chance [back in Europe]," said Chatfield,
who'd planned on visiting America for only
three months, and that period is already up.
However, if he is still around to contest some
of our outdoor Nationals. don't be surprised.
He's already impressed folks at Honda, which
is now supplying him with factory support.
Chatfield's biggest opposition in recent
weeks and again on this weekend carne from St.
George, Utah's Devin Sullivan, another 17-yearold who has recently moved up to the Expert
ranks but who won't be chasing any National
events soon; his 18th birthday won't be until
january, and he still has another year of high
school. The B student has no plans for college;
what he plans now is to race as often as
possible. On this day, Sullivan's I 25cc ride was a
2-year-old backup bike, because his newer 250F
blew up on Saturday, and he drifted back as the
race went on, eventually finishing fifth overall.
However, Chatfield and Sullivan's first 250cc
moto had the crowd wowed, especially on the
last lap, when leader Sullivan had to fend off
Chatfield's repeated attempts to take the lead.
wHe's a fighter," Sullivan said of his
opponent. '" never look back, though; , just
listen and try to protect my lines."
Several times, Chatfield poked his wheel
alongside, trying to nudge his way by.
"These four-Iappers," the Brit said. "It takes
me three laps just to get into it, and I don't get
the best of starts, so I have to pass a few guys."
NeYertheless, Chatfield came back and won
the second moto for the overall. Sullivan
floundered in that second 250cc and dropped
to third overall, behind veteran Terry Fowler
(3-2). (Fowler also scored some first· place
points for his john Burr Cycles sponsors with a
Vet Expert sweep.)
Chatfield scored the Four-Stroke Expert
victory with a sweep.
Chatfield's only defeat came at the hands of
fellow JBC Honda rider Gerrit Ordelman, who
dominated both 125cc Expert motos.
Ordelman is preparing for the West Coast
swing of the 125cc Nationals, and his sweep
here pumped up his spirits.
"I have to make a decision and commit,
the 24-year-old admitted. "I'm fast, and I know

NEW BERUN, NY, JUNE 19
C
asey Clark cruised to perfect I-I rides in
both the I25cc and 250cc Pro/Expert classes at the final round of the Thor/Parts Unlimited
Northeast Classic Motocross Series. Clark dominated every moto from start to finish at the legendary Unadilla Valley Sports Center in upstate
New York. Clark left the facility with the lion's
share of the Pro purse, as well as the 125cc
Pro/Expert series title. Clark dominated the
class points chase, taking the title with a 22point advantage. Clark won the battle but couldn't win the war in the 250cc Pro/Expert-class
tide chase: RRP's Damien Plotts bested Clark by
a measly two points to take the 25Occ-class title.
More than 500 riders came out to race the
unique Unadilla II ("U2") racecourse. The U2
track is used for the Unadilla Valley Sports
Center Amateur events. The Unadilla facility
returned to the Northeast Classic series after a
five-year hiatus.
Clark led the start of the opening 12Scc
Pro/Expert moto, followed by Alex 5igismondi,
Mike Gesso, Tyler Witmer and Matt Coyle.
Clark had gapped Sigismondi by three seconds
by the start of lap two. The top five were all
spread out by the second lap. Coyle went
down near the end of lap two, handing Thomas
Addy fifth. Addy then got by Witmer for fourth.
SO
Clark continued to pull away, crossing the finish
line with a IO-second lead. Sigismondi, Gesso,
Addy and Witmer rounded out the top fIVe.
Clark again led the start of the final moto,
witt-! Sigismondi, Gesso, Jay Niedzialkowski and
Jim Joy in tow. Clark opened up a four-second
advantage by lap two. Sigismondi went down
up near the U2 "Screw You, and Gesso, Dave
Sterritt, Joy and Niedzialkowski all advanced.
Clark had an eight-second advantage by lap
four and increased it to a whopping 14 seconds
at the checkers. Gesso, Sterritt, Coyle and joy
rounded out the top five.
Clark (I-I) topped the class. Gesso (3-2)
took runner-up, and Sterritt (6-3) closed out
the podium.
Clark had his starts down and led the start
of the opening 250cc Pro/Expert moto,
followed by Bruce Stratton, Plotts, John
Lawrence and Addy. The top five quickly
spread out; three seconds separated the entire
top five on lap two. jim Ayres replaced Adtly in
fifth on lap two. Clark had a four-second gap on
Stratton on lap three. Plotts was alone in third,
14 seconds behind Stratton. Clark got the moto
win, but Stratton kept him honest, only allOWing
Clark a four-second advantage. Plotts,
Lawrence and Ayres rounded out the top five.
Clark again nailed the start of the final 250cc
Pro/Expert moto, followed by Stratton,
Sigismondi, Plotts and Nick Kruger. Plotts

passed Sigismondi for third before the end of lap
one. Again the cop five spread out, and the rest
of the moto was a snoozer. Clark got the win
with a seven-second advantage. Stratton, Plotts,
Sigismondi and Kruger rounded out the top five.
Clark (I-I) took the top tier of the podium.
Stratton (2-2) was runner-up, and Plotts (3-3)
