PHOTO BY CLAY LIGHT CMC Pac WEst Motocross Nationals Round 3: Pacific RacEWay A Jewell in the Rough By CLAY LIGHT SEAnLE, WA, JUNE 11 A fter not competing in the opening two rounds of the CMC /'"'\Pac West Nationals, KTM·mounted Rook jewell made his presence felt by beating a talent·laden field of riders in two classes at the third round of the series, held at Pacific Raceway near Seattle. The rider from nearby Tacoma won the 6Scc Open and BScc (9-11) classes to join Idaho's Sam DeAtley, Alaska's Ben lamay and Washington's Ryan Abrigo as one of the top performers on the day, jewell's first win of the day came in the BScc (9·1 I) class, which ran combined with the elder BScc (12-13) riders, Idaho's Matt DeAtley was the cream of the crop in both motos, spending much of those races battling with Kawasaki rider Tevin Tapia, with Malt prevailing. Matt's 1·1 finishes landed him ahead of Tapia (2-2), Thomas Nichols (4-3) and Houston Keane (3-S), the top 8Scc (12-13) class performers, all of whom finished ahead of Oregon's Brad Frace and jewell in the two motos. While Frace beat Tyler Hansen, Damien Sanayei and jewell in moto one, Jewell shined in mota two and scored the overall win with 4-1 finishes. Frace couldn't repeat his earlier success and placed fifth in moto two, dropping him to second overall, ahead of Sanayei (6-2), Hansen (2-6) and Hunter Evanson, who was as inconsistent as the rest of the top fIVe finishers and placed fifth via 3-10 placings. jewell proved just as effective on the smaller 6Scc bikes, and he would again meet Frace in both 6Scc Open motos. The faststarting Frace got the best of Jewell in the opening moto, but jewell turned the tables on Frace and the rest of the field in moto two to finalize his two-class win tally and hand Frace his second of two second-place overall finishes, Sanayei (3-3) netted third overall, ahead of Idaho's 81ake Gill (4-4) and Chance Blackburn (5-6). Lamay, who was preViously one of the top 8Scc riders nationally, has since jumped up to the bigger bikes and has been very successful at the larger-scale races. lamayand fellow Suzuki rider Sam DeAtley traded moto wins in the competitive 2SOcc Intermediate class. lamay got a better start than Sam did in the decisive second moto and, after overtaking early leader Todd Nelson on the second lap, lamay then slammed the door shut on Sam and garnered the overall win with 2-1 placings (to complement his earlier Schoolboy-class victory), Sam, though, still came up big, as he beat Lamay for the 12Scc Intermediate overall and also won the Before The Hill Intermediate class. Abrigo was also spectacular en route to a trio of overall Proclass wins. The Honda rider from Snohomish carded the overall 12Scc, 2SOcc and Open Pro victories, all of which came by virtue of I-I finishes. and most of which were accompUshed in comefrom·behind fashion. The National number·B6 plate holder led Tracy Johnson to victory in all three classes, and Johnson was also impressive on the day.
