Round 5: Albany Motorsports Park
Weimer Packs a Wallop!
By CLAY LIGHT
ALBANY, OR, MAY 28-29
S
uzuki-mounted Idahoan Jake Weimer sent the competition reeling with a I-I K.O. punch in the Premier Pro class at round five
of the Western Four-Stroke Nationals, hekJ at Albany Motorsports
Park on Memorial Day Weekend. Weimer made short work of
both motos with what appeared to be an effortless perfonnance in
a talented field of riders and in front of several thousand spectators.
The weekend didn't st4rt out the way the American Suzuki/Bill's
Pipes/Race Tech-backed teenager from Rupert, Idaho, had planned,
though. Weimer took a nasty tumble in the opening 250F Pro-class
moto on Saturday and called it a day, and, despite a tweaked neck
and being "sore all over," he soldiered on through the pain on
Sunday to gamer the top payoff of $1200 for his efforts.
On Saturday, Kawasaki-mounted Scott Simon netted the
overall win in the 250F Pro class. The Team Green rider from
Riverside, California, who was making his series debut, was
impressive; Simon overcame an II th-place start in the opening
moto, passing Chris Blose, Tiger Lacey and Ryan Abrigo in the
late stages to card the win. Simon then finished just where he
had to in moto two, behind lacey and Blose, who led much of
mota one, to win overall. Lacey (4-1) placed second overall,
ahead of series points leader Blose, whose 3-2 finishes
completed the pOSitions on the rostrum. Abrigo (2-4) and
Californian Tony Sherman rounded out the top five overall.
Thirty-six riders competed in Sunday's Premier Pro class,
including AMA National and 5upercross regulars lacey, Abrigo
and Oregon's Mike Corder, the defending series champion.
None of those riders, though, would have an answer for Weimer.
Weimer, who placed second in the class at the Boise round (and
won the 2S0F class), put as much as 16 seconds on the rest of the
competition in his dual mota wins, as was the case in moto one.
Weimer was among a lead pack - that also included Abrigo,
Leighton Lillie, Carter Gurnee and Robb Floth - when the field
hit turn one in the opening Premier-class moto, but Weimer's
lead would balloon each lap, as he was the only rider to take on
the massive jump called "The Gap," and he breezed away to his
aforementioned lead. Abrigo ran a solid second, followed by a
Lillie/Corder/Lacey swapfest, which would end in favor of the
Gomez Racing/MSR-backed Lacey. Corder placed fourth, while
Oregon's Ryan Terlecki, who started well outside the top 10,
finished fifth. Lillie, series points leader Daryl Ecklund, Gurnee,
Matt Karlsen and Sherman rounded out the top 10.
lacey grabbed the lead at the st4rt of moto two, although it was
short-lived; lacey fell in a heavily watered tum and lost the lead to
Weimer, who then vanished. While Lacey quickty remounted, his
hopes of a moto-two win quickly evaporated, as Weimer again
easily won. lacey held a comfortable margin over a battle between
Corder and Abrigo that raged the entire moto, ending in favor of
Corder, who assumed the series points lead at the end of the day
with his third-place finish in the moto and fourth overall, behind
lacey (4-2) and Abrigo (2-4) but ahead of Ecklund (7-6).

Winchester Speedpark Spring Series
Round 7: Southwick MX338
Southwick, Party of One Thousand...
By DONN COLLINGS
SOUTHWICK, MA, MAY 28
T
here has been an awful lot of motocross racing history made
on the sandy soil of Southwick's MX338, and some legendary riders have emerged to carve out their own place in MX
history. What was supposed to be the second part of the Winchester Speedpark and NEMX membership challenge series has
come to be caJled the MX version of the "Perfect Storm," resulting in the largest racer turnout ever in the long history of the
track. Race cancellations for two New England race organizations, NESC and NEMA, coupled with outstanding weather,
brought a record total of 1,007 riders to Southwick.
The combined crews of W5P and NEMX did a bang-up job,
keeping an army of riders rolling on and off the st4rt gate, as well
as scoring what must have seemed like a million bikes.
There is nothing that completes a trip to "The Wick" like
watching local hero Doug Henry rail through the deep sand,
impossibly low and smooth. Maybe it was the weather, or maybe
it was a scouting trip for the upcoming National race, where the

Troy Lee Designs·backed Henry usually makes an appearance to
steal a holeshot or two, but one thing is for sure: When the Over
30 Experts lined up, there was a very familiar number-I 9 Y22S0
rolling up next to them. Everyone (including this writer) thought
that a Henry holeshot was a forgone conclusion, but apparently
no one told Todd Richotte. The 5ky Cycle/REP/5inisalo/Suzukibacked rider shot to the front of the pack in moto one, and it
wasn't until well into lap two that Henry was able to get around
going into the Gravity Cavity section near the finish line.
Mota two was more of the same, with Richotte taking the
lead for most of the shortened moto and Henry working his
Y2250 smoothly through the sandy lines to take the lead with
half a lap to go.
Being that New England has long been a hotbed for
motocross racing. it should come as no surprise that the local
Women's racing action features some great competition. As it
turned out, the top two riders for the day came to the track in
the same rig, and not just because they are Team Suzuki/
Bettencourts/Pro-ActionfThor teammates -they are also sisters.
Fifteen-year-old Angela Crowley and 13-year-old Katelyn
Crowley spent the day at the front of the pack in the Women's
class, splitting the holeshots and even trading off mota wins.
Angela took the holeshot in moto one, but it was Katelyn passing
her to win. In mota two, the sisters Crowley switched off, and
Katelyn got off the famous Southwick starting pad qUicker, but
Angela passed her on lap two for the mota win and first place
overall. It was a great day for watching the Women's racing, and
hopefully a sign of more to come.
