Rubin Frankenfield led through the 10th turn, but then Scott Harwell and Mark Junge blasted by to battle for the next two laps. Michael ~arofalo and Justin Marm ran fourth and fifth. Then Garofalo moved to third and then second when Harwell ran off in turn 17. It was a five-man contest in the Expert B Superstock final. Harwell slipped by Garofalo to lead, while Tray Batey and John Jacobi got by Marm. At halfway, Batey challenged Harwell but went down in turn three. David Weber grabbed fifth going to the checkered flag. Giovanni Rojas worked his way up to the front in the C Superstock Expert final, getting by Weber, Keith Marshall and Junge in this hard-fought skirmish. He held off a last-lap charge by Marshall to claim the win. Layman got the upper hand over Burleson in the Novice race. In the various Twins races, Batey ran away with the Heavyweight Superscock contest. Tony Sawyer and Bo Morgan went one-two in the Heavyweight Twins Superbike final, and Joe Ball snatched third. Denny Passeto took the Novice victory. Cory Burleson took both the Superstock and Superbike Novice Ughtweight races. Tim Rinaldi, Chris Normand and Marshall went six laps side by side in the C Superbike final. Rich Molinaro made his bid to join this threesome but came up short at the line. Burleson, Layman and David Van Dyke had a battle in the Novice C Superbike race, but on the lap that counted, Burleson was there. Chris Parrish and Avery Clark were neck in neck in the Formula Two Expert race, but at the checkered flag, Parrish had it. Niels Grove took the Novice victory. At the halfway point of the Formula One contest, Batey, Junge, Ben Thompson, James Stroud and Harwell were all within one second of each other when Harwell went down and Batey decided to split to Victory. Scott Carpenter took the win in the Senior Superbike final, and he - as did the other 322 racers who came to Virginia International Raceway for the Cycle Jam - stated that he wouid be back next year. PHOTOS BY VICKI SULPYNHS PHOTOGRAPHY MichelinlWERA National Challenge Series Round 3: Virginia International Raceway Batey, Burleson Make Triple Plays By DAN SCHMITT DANVILLE, VA, MAY 22 U nder full sun and on a warming track, the Open Superstock Expert final charged into the reducing-radius turn one, with Ben Thompson first, Vesrah's John Jacobi second, David Weber third, and Mark Junge fourth. On the next lap, Junge charged to second, but he went down in turn one on the third lap. Jacobi snatched first, but Thompson came back again. At the white flag, Weber took over second, while Thompson went on for the win. Michael Dillion ran away with the Novice win. Victor Baptista charged from a long-delayed second-wave start to grab third in the 600cc Superstock Novice final, as J.B. Layman and Bobby Stoker ran one and two. Cory Burleson ran down Charlie Coleman to take the 750cc Novice Superstock final, with Tony Palarie and Baptista placing third and fourth. It was a three-way gunfight in the 600cc Expert Superstock final. as Junge, Jacobi and Weber swapped th~ lead three times on the front straight and many times over this 2.4-mile road course. Weber had the drive out of turn 17 to take the victory. In the 600cc Superbike final, Giovanni Rojas and Keith Marshall went at it and went one-two, while young Josh Herrin kept them honest in third place. In the Heavyweight Twins, Tray Batey again took a runaway victory on his Vesrah SVlooO. Cale SWiger and Russell Masecar battled for second, with Swiger getting the nod. Novice rider Denny Passeto had his Ducati humming, beating Louis Schalow and Scott Sheehan. In the lightweight class, David Yaakov had the edge over Ross Ryals in the Expert race, while Burleson took another victory in the Novice race, over Scott Conrad. Burleson also won the 7S0cc Novice Superbike contest. The Vesrah boys were at it again in the 750cc Expert Superscock final. Batey and Jacobi gained a little on Weber, Thompson and Michael Garofalo. Jacobi showed Batey a wheel during the white-flag lap, but Batey stayed focused and took the win. In Formula Two action, Brian Kcraget used his two-stroke Honda to defeat Chris Parrish, on the four-stroke twin Suzuki. Brandon Faulkner just edged out James Johnson by eighthundredths of a second in the Novice race. Thompson stayed right on Batey's heels in the Formula One race; it was close but no cigar, as Batey took his third Victory of the day.
