said. "I had a faster bike, I know that for a fact. I took a wide line on that turn, and Grant made an aggressive move to get past me. It was a good move on his part. I wish I'd have closed off my turn earlier and taken a tighter line instead of going to the outside. But I thought I had enough speed to hold him off - and I didn't." Short finished third overall, his best outdoor finish ever. His previous best were a fourth at Mt. Morris this year and at Southwick in '03. "My bike was able to put me in a good position off the start," Short said. "The only difference between this week and past weeks was that I was able to do it in both motos." Splitting Langston and Short on the podium was KTM's Ryan Mills. The upstate New Yorker could not have picked a better time to shine at the Nationals because, as he put it: ':All the brass from the States and Europe was at this race!" Mills was due to break through with a good race. He's had some solid performances lately, running lap times consistent with the leaders but never really putting two really good motos together - much less wining one, like he did in the second moto here. "Unbelievable," Mills said. "There's so many fast guys on this circuit, being that far ahead was just awesome." Mills' dominance didn't even waver a bit in the second moto, even when Langston put the chase on. Mills was hitting all his lines, riding mistake-free and just flat-out took the second moto from everybody. Mills' KTM teammate Mike Alessi was also fast. The young flyer was in the hunt for the overall in both motos, and he almost grabbed it from Langston in the first moto with a last-lap charge reminiscent of the epic charge Langston put on Alessi at Hangtown. But an endo midway though the second moto would erase Alessi's second in the first moto. Just behind Alessi in fifth-place overall was Team AMSOIl./ Chaparral/Honda's Josh Grant. The superspeedy Californian carried the torch for Factory Connection again this week at Red Bud, the site of his first-ever podium finish. "Overall, it was a good day," said Grant, who currently sits in fourth overall in the 125-c1ass points chase, one point ahead of Alessi. "The track was rough, and it was very hard to pass." Coming back from a poor start and subsequent poor first-moto finish was the current 125cc points leader, Jim's Motorcycle Sales/Honda rider Brown. Brown, who holds a stillcomfortable 24-point lead over Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Ivan Tedesco, rallied from his poor first-moto performance to score a fourth in the second moto and salvage seventh overall - just three points behind Tedesco on the day. Rounding out the top-10 overall were KTM's Nathan Ramsey in eighth, Yamaha's top finisher Danny Smith in ninth and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Matt Walker in 10th.
