MAY 13 .,-"e Salinas Ramblers orchestrated another I great day of racing for the sixth annual Ricky Graham Memorial, held at the King City Fairgrounds in honor of the late, great Ricky Graham. A familiar face in this part of Califomia, Graham grew up and raced here for most of his life with a lot of the riders who come out to ride this race each year. The 39-time Grand National Champion was also first in the nation in 1984 and 1993, and he set a record for the fastest race on a mile at Springfield, Illinois, averaging 103.06 mph in 1986. Graham lost his life in a fire in 1998. As always, the Ramblers do a great job at track prep. giving the riders a nice cushion-oval ride. Riders from as young as 4 years old up to riders over 60 rode the eight-lap main events. Young Lauren Wallace, who nearly lost her riding with the number-one District 35 Vet plate, finished the Pro class behind Herman. These riders are good friends, riding together frequendy at Wallace's home and sharing moments in the pfts at every track they attend. Tommy Carriger, another of Wallace's buddies, finished in the second spot in the Vet Over 30 class, behind Anthony Giammanco, Friday following Mother's Day, with Kurt Chandler finishing third. Chandler and during the fair. Armbands more, are a tight-knit group of friends, and that was never more than evident than after Wallace's crash; in less than two weeks, they put together a dinner on her behalf that raised $15,000 to help with her medical expenses. Johnny Larson got the holeshot in the Vintage A 600cc/75Occ event, with Giammanco and Robert Scalley on his back wheel. life last year following a horrible crash at Giammanco got around Larson on lap three, while Scalley kept Larson honest through the eighth and final lap. Jess Race Garcia, Leah Faro, Jacob Olmos and Derrick Ponton all won their respective comebacks of the year. Stevie Bonsey, who sat beside Wallace daily during her recovery, rode the Open A event to an easy victory. Clay Chambers, who can often be seen at the track lifting Wallace high over his head in the air, led the Vet A Over 40 event to the checkers, with Paul Henman right on his back wheel. Chambers, Memorial Race is hosted each year by the Salinas Ramblers on the Jimmy Higuera both coach Wallace and Bonsey. These coastal-community members, and many Willow Springs, rode in front of the 2S0cc pack from pole to pole in one of the great racing The King City Ricky Graham 125cc Four-Stroke classes. Cody Silva flew around the track on his 8S to win the 85ec A class. with Briar Bauman finishing second. Bauman's first race took place during the 2002 Ricky Graham Memorial Race, where he finished last in the C class. purchased for the races allow free entry into the fair. eN Making a spectacular comeback after a life-threatening crash last year, Lauren Wallace (64W) led the combined 250cc event from wire to wire at the sixth annual Ricky Graham Memorial.
