PHOTOS BV GORDON LUNDE Dunlop/WERA National Endurance Series Round 2: Autobahn Country Club Vesrah Has Fun on the Autobahn! By DAN SCHMITT JOUET, IL, MAY 7 or the second round of the 2005 season, F WERA was invited to bring this action- packed Dunlop National Endurance race to the brand-new, privately owned Autobahn Country Club, located 45 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. Forty-two teams made the trek to Chicagoland to challenge this 2. I-mile roadcourse. The weather was perfect for an endurance race, with the sun shining and tem- peratures in the mid·70s. When the green flag flew at I p.m., Tray Batey. on the Vesrah Suzuki, stole the lead from Army of Darkness, Red Star, Team Velocity and a fast-moving Bell's Suzuki. On the second lap, Roger Bell moved to second, with Red Star third and Velocity fourth. Army of Darkness did not come around on the sixth lap, so they went to their backup bike: it seems they had dropped a valve on the ''''' bike. During the second hour, Vesrah continued to lead, with Yamaha-mounted Red Star in second and a fast-moving Team Eclipse charging to third. Just past the halfway point, the red flag flew. This brought everyone back to the pits as the safety crew began to clean the oil in turn 10 after Checkout Racing apparently blew an engine. On the restart, 7S0cc Suzuki-mounted Team Eclipse took the lead, followed by Vesrah Suzuki, Red Star and 5150 Racing. Eclipse was two laps down, so John Jacobi, on the Vesrah Suzuki 1000, took it easy, looking for the signal to pit. Royalty Racing and Ed Bargy RS Endurance took fifth and sixth. Vesrah Suzuki continued up front, building its lead by four laps. Red Star and Team Eclipse battled for second, while 5150 and Royalty went back and forth for fourth overall. Ed Bargy RS Endurance held down sixth, with Bell's Arnchu Racing a close seventh and 4&6 Racing's 5MP Racing a solid eighth. When the checkered flag flew, Vesrah Suzuki took its second win of the year. "This track is a lot of fun," Vesrah's Batey stated. "The real challenge is the way the comers are laid out; there are some fast comers that you can't see around - you have to be where you need to be. It is hard to be perfect, so you are always looking for that next lap." CN AUTOBAHN COUNTRY CLUB JOUET, IWNOIS RESULTS" MAy 7, 2005 (ROUND 2) O/A: I. Vesrah Suzuki (Suz); 2. Red Star (Yam); 1. Scott Harwell was there to battle with this Vesrah Suzuki duo, as Charlie Coleman and J.B. Wiyman broke away from the field of Novice racers to lead that portion of this first race of the day. Batey ran wheel to wheel with Junge, but at the flag it was Junge. In the Novice Superstock races, Layman and Ron Gallegos ran up front until Gallegos fell in the 600cc race. Brian and Thomas Moore ran second and third. In the 7S0cc race, Coleman had his 750cc Suzuki purring as he took another victory, over the 600cc Yamahamounted Layman. Harwell blasted off the line on the Arclight Suzuki to lead the Expert 600cc 5uperstock race. It was still tight after three laps, as David Weber took the lead, followed by Harwell, Junge, John Jacobi and Justin Marm. Junge was on the gas as he took the lead on the fifth lap and held on for the victory. "The trick here is riding through the bumps," Junge said afterward, "and I've got both bikes working well, and that's the key." In Heavyweight Twins action, Batey ran away from Cale Swiger in the Expert race, while David Johnson took the Novice win. In the lightweight Expert class, Roger Bell and I 66 Deal's Gap Racing taak the win in the Lightweight Superbike class. JULY 6,2005 • CYCLE NEWS David Yaakov went side by side for the entire eight laps, with Bell gaining an edge of .028 seconds at the line for victory. Batey took it off the line in the 750xx Expert Superstock Onal, as Jacobi and Weber ran behind. Harwell was on the charge from seventh place, first getting by Reuben Frankenfield and then Jacobi. With one lap to go, Harwell snatched second from Weber. Batey took his second win of the day. Adam Dolney took his Yamaha out front in the Expert 600cc Superbike race, with John Herrin, Keith Marshall, Mark Crozier and Marm follOWing. As Dolney extended his lead, Marm moved by Crozier for fourth, but that was all as the checkered flag was shown to Dolney first. In the 750cc race, Ben Thompson took the early lead, with Marshall and Marm dogging him, but he never looked back en route to the win. ZYVAX's Layman had his hands fuli, as Gallegos challenged him at every turn in the Novice 600cc Superbike race. The two Moores followed, and Wiyman barely squeaked out the win with a .757-second gap over Gallegos. Tony Palarie ran away with the 7SOcc race, leaVing the Moore boys to battle for second. "The real trick here was just keeping two wheels beneath you," Wiyman stated after two wins and two seconds. "This was a real balancing act." Mark Junge (1) leads Tray Batey (1), John Jacobi (49), Scott Harwell (9) and Ben Thompson (907) in the Open Superstock final at round twa of the MichelinlWERA National Challenge Series. Batey took his third victory of the day in the Formula One race, with Harwell second and Jacobi third. In the Formula Two race, the twostroke Honda of Kendrick Morrison barely beat the four-stroke Suzuki of Chris Parrish as this twosome ran eight perfect laps. eN AUTOBAHN COUNTRY CLUB JOUET, IWNOIS RESULTS: MAy 8, 2005 (ROUND 2) F·I: I.
