June 4-5, 2005 OFF-ROAD _ Fourth Annual KTM/Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge en the checkered nag fell at the fourth annual KTM/Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge at Reynolds Pasture in Maplesville, Alabama. it was the AmPro Yamaha team that survived 48 tough laps to take top honors. Reading like a who's-who of off-road racing. the team's roster included defending National Enduro Champion Randy Hawkins. former GNCC Champion Barry Hawk. two-time defending National Hare Scrambles Champion Jason Raines. defending WORCS Champion Nathan Woods. and enduro/desert/ISDE/Baja legend Ty Davis. Barry Hawk got the team off to a fast start, jumping out to the early lead. They continued there until running out of gas on the sixth lap. It was a setback that would take hours to make up. When the sun set. both Davis and Woods used their nighttime riding experience from the 24Hour at Glen Helen to regain the lead. Once out front, they never looked back. The club used a LeMans-style start that required the riders to sprint to their bikes. kickstart and go. The Elite class was the first to take off. and it was Hawk of the AmPro Yamaha team getting the holeshot. with Dustin Gibson of KTM Southeast/ Cycle Specialty charging behind through the grasstrack and into the woods. The Expert classes followed. with the KTM/ FTR/MCC team of Jason Chambers. Ralph Martin. Bradley Hodge. Paul Sebum. Carlos Sebum, Allen Sebum and Lee Dailey out front and the Graham KTM/Last Dime team of Josh Scott, Hayden Moore. Thomas Bennett, Richard Ward. Mike Sampson and Aaron Adams close behind. The Sportsman division was led by the Mastercraft-Two team of Ricky Dennis Jr.• Michael Shealy. Paul Dennis, Travis Schneider. Gene Zobel and Matt Taylor for Ronald McDonald Charities. Ironman Josh W 54 JULY 6, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS Whitaker took the holeshot on his KTM 400. followed by Fletcher Aspden. New to the roster this year was the Ironwoman class. and it had seven entries. Suzy Moody grabbed the early lead aboard a KTM 250. A race of this length normally involves multiple lead changes due to pit stops and unexpected trouble. After four hours of racing. the KTM Southeast/Cycle Specialty team led the Elite division after the AmPro Yamaha team had run out of gas on lap six. The Expert division was developing into a slugfest. The early afternoon leader was the KTM Southeast team of Derek Bratcher. Ben Weathers, Jason Woffard. Taras Massey. Clint Robinson and Ian Sherwood; followed closely by the Hattiesburg Cycles Suzuki team of Lee Everett. Dustin Stevens. Scotty Hubbard. Carsten Cagle. Will McConnell and Greg Walker. The Huntsville Power Sports team of Chad Maddox. Johnny Shields. Eric Green. Robbie Anderson. Shane Garner and Eric Meeks held the lead in the Sportsman class. Ironman Mike Phillips not only was leading the class but also was an incredible 14th overall. Meanwhile. Casey Campbell had piloted her Honda CRF2S0X to the front in the Ironwoman class. As the sun set. things began to get interesting. At the halfway point AmPro Yamaha had regained the overall lead. KTM Southeast/Cycle Specialty held down second. followed by Hattiesburg Cycle KTM team of Landon Carter. Frank Carter. Cliff Ousley, Taylor Reynolds. Bryan Henson and Glen Myatt. Graham KTM/Last Dime and KTM Southeast continued to battle in the Expert division, while the Sportsman division had a new leader. The SSC One team of Ryan Overton. Tyler Holbrook, Andy McRee, Mike Fann, Nathan Martin and Adam Barr was out front ahead of the H&H team of Brett Burkitt. John Carr. Mark Hutchinson. Eric Rentschler and Ryan
