HMC KTM Supermoto racing team owner Mitch Hansen was the"old man" to beat in the Vet final Saturday. Canadian National Champion Emerson Connor was tough in the mini ranks, sweeping the Premier Mini and Beginner divisions on both days of racing. of the weekend's support classes. The two had a great race with each other in the Premier Mini class, and they both won races in the Amateur and Beginner Supermoto classes on Sunday. The stars of the SMX Pro class were the riders from the HMC Generations of Sonoma team, with Troy Lee Designs Honda's Chris Fillmore making a guest appearance. Benny Carlson took the lead in Saturday's SMX main by driving an inside line exiting the asphalt oval. His old teammate, Fillmore, was sandwiched between Carlson and David Baffeleuf, with Henry Wiles and Darryl Atkins running fourth and fifth, respectively. The front three quickly separated and left Wiles to deal with Atkins. Carlson had a great run and easily cranked out the laps needed to take the win. Fillmore and Baffeleuf also rode out the race to hold their respective positions, while Atkins was only able to work his way into fourth. Even on the warmup lap, Fillmore seemed to be pushing Baffeleuf for the lead in Sunday's race. The two of them rocketed off the line, with Carlson in windows-up, red-light pursuit. Fillmore kept constant pressure on Baffeleuf, while Carlson was visibly catching the leaders on the asphalt and then losing some ground in the dirt. Fillmore was able to muscle past Baffeleuf and take the lead in the first turn after the dirt section. Given room to run, Fillmore put his head down and just rode the track. Baffeleuf wasn't pressuring Fillmore as he had been, but he was still close behind. He Some of the weekend's top Pro Supennoto tolent also did bo"le. David Baffeleuf (23) won the SMX final, over Benny Carfson (45) and Chris Fillmore (partialty hidden behind BaHeleuf). placed Omar Isaak, who was busy holding off Dan Rounding. Lewis won easily, followed by Isaak and then Rounding. When Lewis rode out for the last Amateur race on Sunday, things had changed. He was working on a win streak of sorts, though it paled in comparison to his run of eO-pius consecutive dirt-feature wins. Dale Corser was able to get the closest to Lewis in Sunday's SM I main and finished in second. Rounding was again in the chase, and he earned every bit of his third-place finish. Isaak, who drove from Mexico City with his mechanic, Pepe Garcia, suffered a mechanical on the first lap while running in second place. "Something very strange happened in my bike," Isaak said. "The carburetor came off, and we can't believe it. We tried to fix it very fast." Despite the disappointment, Isaak added: "It was worth the trip 1200 percent. We are happy we can do the races!" The highlight of the weekend's support races was the Vet class. Mitch Hansen, the owner of the HMC Generations of Sonoma team, has been unable to stay off a bike during team practices, and he put that experience to good use and won Saturday's first Vet race with a textbook inside move on Isaak on the white-flag lap. Hansen never looked back and led Saturday's entire Vet main, finishing ahead of Tim Boblin and Mark Mancini. Hansen kept his pace up the next morning, and he was at the front of Sunday's race until he lowsided, allowing Isaak, Perry Prichard and John Casimir up into the top-three finishing positions. Devon McDonald won Saturday's Amateur main after spending the previous two days in track school. On Sunday, he stepped up into the SM I class and rounded out his weekend with a fifthplace finish. Emerson Connor and Michael Johnson hinted at a future rivalry in the remainder and Carlson had long left the rest of the field and seemed to be waiting for something to happen to the leader. Something did. A gentle lowside cost Fillmore exactly one pair of gloves and the lead. He did get the bike up and running quickly, but he had lost enough positions that he was now in a race just to make the podium rather than to get the win. Baffeleuf went on to win, with Carlson second despite a minor mishap in the dirt. Fillmore made his way back into third. eN USA INltRNATlONAL RACEWAY SHAwANO, WISCONSIN RISUlTS: JUNE 18-19,2005 (ROUND 1 Of 5) Saturday SPORT MINI: I. Jacob Cunningham (Yam); 2. Wade Johnson(Hon); 3.
