event. That's all day. His brother Phillip Smage was second with 59 dabs, followed by their father, Noel, with 69 dabs. ''As all of us were taking lesser-troubled routes, Patrick was going for the hardest line I set up!" said papa Smage. Yes, there was no doubt about it - this was a home-turf event for the Smages; after all, this was Patrick's back yard. But not one of the 30 competitors complained. In fact, every rider wanted to come back next year. The crowds were large for this event, and the sections were so close for the fans to view. Spectator comments were positive. ''That tire was right near my face, honey - wow, did you see him do that?" remarked one man who had never witnessed trials before after a rider used a wheelie turn with the front wheel just inches from the couple's faces - all in full control, mind you. Hometown rider Paul Philbrick won the Expert class, followed by Illinois' Jim Altemus (fresh out of retirement) in second place. This is normally a large class, but Scott Loveless was organizing the Youth trials, Jeff Knaack didn't have a ride, .. and Mike Tinkham from Illinois had moved up to champ class for the year. Iowa's Austin Kent won the Advanced class. Gas Gas pilot Tim Detweiler from Illinois finished second, and Mitch Mansker finished third. The largest class of the day was the Intermediates. Mike McConaughy won with 15 dabs but bowed out of the points and trophy at this event. Mark Bruggink rode to a 34-dab ride on a 70s-vintage Suzuki RU50. Jon Weikent rode to third piace. The Novice-class winner was Max Gernhardt. The Youth winner was Mitch Gernhardt, with a score of 13 and 16 cleans. District 16 motocrosser/trials guru Jeff Lois rode on an sprained ankle from a crash at the Senior Nationals. This didn't -, deter him from scoring just three dabs in the Advanced Exhibition ride. Moose Racing Products prOVided giveaway items for all competitors, including T-shirts, hats and key rings. Their support is much appreciated. eN RESULTS YTH: I. Mitch Gernhardt. NOV: I.
