Virginia City Grand Prix
By DONNIE BIRD
VIRGINIA CITY, NY, APR. 3G-MAY 1
"The Virginia City Motorcycle Club hosted
I the 34th annual running of the Grand Prix
in Virginia City. Nevada. A historic race that has
had its share of celebrities (such as Dan Smith,
Danny Hamel and Larry Roeseler), and that is
held in a historic town - it's a recipe for success. The race drew approximatety 700 riders.
Saturday's race (for Novices. Women and the
Vintage classes) had sunny skies and warm
temperature. Sunday's race (for Amateur and
Experts) saw dark skies, light rain and muddy
conditions - just your typical northern Nevada
spring weather. The course had everything,
from the always exciting Main Street start to
challenging downhills and single-track through
the trees, with just a few rocks to keep every-
one sharp. The races were three hours long on
Saturday and (our hours on Sunday. The race
schedule next year will allow the Amateurs and
Experts to race on Saturday, so they can enjoy
the Virginia City night life. Novices, Women
and Vintage racers will race on Sunday.
Racers start in rows of 10, spaced 15
seconds apart, barring any mish;aps. One need
only look in the pits to tell where the serious
racers were preparing; there are lots of people
with clipboards and stopwatches, trying to
figure out who's leading and who's losing time.
Only six riders made seven laps on Sunday; as
the final laps were completed, everyone was
predicting a different winner.
In the end, Reno Motor Sport rider Dennis
Belingheri came out on top. Kawasaki rider
Brian Brown from Idaho, who had just
returned to racing following an injury, finished
second overall and first 2S0cc Expert.
Kawasaki support rider Justin Soule was third
overall and second 2S0cc Expert. Jesse Ocha
upheld the honors for the mature racers with
fourth overall, first Over 40 Expert. Local racer
Reece Honea, another Reno Motor Sports
rider, was fifth overall, first I25cc Expert. The
last of the seven lappers was Steve Garnett on

one point ahead of Long.
James Gentry nabbed the holeshot in the
opening 250cc C moto, onty to crash in the
second turn. Gentry recovered to post an
eventual 4-1 score, earning the runner-up
honors behind Chris Palmer, who finished 1-2
on the day.
Matt Bell won the OSee (9-13) and 8Scc
(12-13) divisions, after finishing ahead of Sean
Cunningham in three out of four motos.
Cunningham was the runner-up in both classes,
ahead of points leader Cody Haney.
The final 6Scc Beginner mota featured a
winner-take-a1I, lead-swapping debate between
Tyler Roberts and Cody Coleman. Roberts was
first at the nag, and his 3-1 score won the day,
ahead of Coleman's 2-2 tally.
The Over 35 contest provided an extra
thrill, due to the presence of Mitchell
McCarter's immaculate 1983 yz490. The old
Yamaha ran strong and carried McCarter to 1-2
finishes to net second overall, behind Ray
