Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series Final Round: Woodland Motocross Park Stevens Smokes 'em at Woodland By CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, APR. 30 amaha-mounted Oregonian Kurt Stevens stormed the eighth and final round of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series at Woodland Motocross Park in southwestern Washington. Armed with his potent Yamaha yz465, the former professional rider carded an overall Open Evolution Expert-class win. Despite pressure in both motos from Oregon's Joe Brockway, Stevens held on to net dual mota wins in the class, although it was Brockway, a current AMA Pro rider, who snared the class championship with his second-place finishes on the day. Neither Brockway nor Blake Landon could reel in Stevens in either mota; Stevens darted to the head of the field in both motos and never looked back. Y PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT Kurt Stevens (8) leads Joe Brockway (609) in the second Open Evolution Expert moto at the final round of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series. The field of riders featured some of the fastest riders to compete in the class this season, including former AHRMA National Champion jim Rowand Washington's Paul Thompson. Brockway was the rider who managed to stick closest to Stevens and placed 2-2 to lead Landon (3-3), Ben Sullivan (4-4) and Thompson (5-5) into the top five. Maico-mounted Marvin Newton nailed both the overall win and the class championship in the Intermediate class after replicating Stevens' mota scores. Mark Schmidt and Doug Hafsos placed second to Newton in the two motos and completed the top three. Honda rider Andrew Sullivan thumped to the overall 2S0cc and Four-Stroke Expert-class wins on the day and, by virtue of those overall wins, clinched titles in both classes after riding consistently all season long. Joe Casey and Mark Sullivan challenged Andrew in the 250cc class on several occasions, including a wheel-to-wheel bumpfest between Casey and Andrew in mota one. However, Andrew survived a mota-two shootout to garner his first of two wins; he then came back in the Four-Stroke class to win and drop former class champion Randy Skiver and Bill Grubin to second and third place overall, respectively. CZ-mounted Chris Clark was another rider who logged dual class championships. The thirtysomething from Gladstone has had his share of ups and downs this season, which started of( in Ward Creek, Washington, but he held his 1972 CZ400 together long enough to escape with the Open Vintage Expert-class championship. Clark had tough competition from many of the Northwest's best on this day, but none of them could put the clamps on the tall, lanky Oregonian, who won both motos. Washington's Roger Landberg and Row split second-place finishes in the two matos, but Landberg's 3-2 placings bested Row's 2-DNS tally and the Bultaco rider placed second overall, followed by Husqvarna riders Dirk Murphy and Bill Grubin. Montesa-mounted Charlie Brown marked his return to racing with a pair of mota wins in the Over SO Expert class. Skiver (4-2), who has churned out wins throughout the past several seasons at an alarming rate, placed second to Brown while piloting his unusual Penton/Honda "Penda" hybrid. Bill Row was in contention for· second overall until a crash in moto two sent him to the hospital, leaving him with a 2-DNF tally on the day. eN WOODLAND MOTOCROSS PARK WOODLAND, WASHINGTON RESULTS: APRIL 30, 2005 (ROUND 8 OF 8) Vintage XR7S INT: I. AHRMA National Flat Track Race Willow Springs Raceway A Good Night's Work for Horton By DENNIS SUTER ROSAMOND,CA,APR.30 A fter heavy Thursday morning rains in the Antelope VaJley, I""'\che outlook for Saturday's AHRMA National Flat Track Race at Willow Springs Raceway's dirt oval was in doubt. Saturday dawned cool, clear and windy, but steady work by john Hately brought in a track that was near perfection for the main events. A 1951 Triumph ridden by Gary Davis was able to best George Wills' 1947 Indian in the Dinosaur brakeless class. Third was Brian Haenlein from Brethern, Michigan. Wills traveled from Manhattan, Illinois, to defend his AHRMA National crowns in both the Dina and Classic SOOcc/750cc classes. In the Classic SOOcc/7S0cc race, joel Kath, on a BSA Goldstar, passed early leader Gary Davis, aJso on a Goldie, for the win. George Wills' 1953 Harley flat head was third. Acton, California's Mickey Alzola, defending Super Senior National champ, prevailed over a persistent Mel Stoner in the race for riders over 60 years of age. Both A1zola and Stoner rode Triumphs. Hesperia, California's Jim Rosa beat a strong field of IT Yamahas in the 70s Singles race, the largest class of the night. AHRMA National Champion jim Monegon from Twisp, Washington, was relegated to fourth, behind Ron Moore and Joe Steffen. jeff johnson again won the Triumph Challenge race, which is dedicated to the memory of former Antelope Valley resident jack Hately, who passed away last year. But the night belonged to a local rider from Lancaster, Tom S4 JUNE 22,2005 • CYCLE NEWS Horton, who entered six classes and won six races against very formidable competition. Sportsman 600cc action found Horton getting the holes hot, but he was passed by Monegon on the fourth lap. Horton dogged Monegon's Honda until the white-flag lap, when he powered under Monegon out of turn two and held on for the win. The '70s Two-Strokes are a relatively new AHRMA class for later 2S0cc race bikes. Bultaco Astra pilot Brad Holt jumped into the lead, over Monegon and Horton, both on Can-Am-powered machines. Horton got by Monegon on the second lap. On lap six, Holt left a little opening out of turn four, and Horton eased Holt's Bul up the banking in turn one for the pass and the win. john Lundgen was third on his Kawasaki, and Monegon was fourth. A Suzuki twin was Horton's preferred weapon for the Sportsman 250cc class, and again Holt provided the competition. on another Bultaco. This race saw Marc Lyuns grab the lead and hold it until midrace, when Horton, on the screaming twin, took the lead. Horton was followed closely by Holt for second and Lyuns for third place. The Senior event put Horton and Monegon on the same grid again, with Monegon's Honda leading into the first turn. Horton, on a Triumph, went into first on the second lap and held on for the win. Rick Reeq from St. George, Utah, got a terrible start but worked his Triumph through the field for second place. Horton also won the Classic 2SOcc race on another Suzuki twin, and the Sportsman 7SOs on a Triumph. He was entered in the Classic 500cc/750cc race, but his Bultaco Bandito seized during CN practice. Nevertheless, all in all, it was a good night's work. Tom Hartan (55) and Gary Davis (89T) battle in the Sportsman 600cc class at the AHRMA National Flat Track Race at Willow Springs Raceway.
