Wild West Nationals Round 2: Mesquite Moto-X Park Leith Lights Up Mesquite! Bv DICK GOODWIN MESQUITE, NV, MAR. 27 esquite Moto-X Park seems to attract big races and great racing. Sunday was no exception, as exceptional racing action was M seen throughout the program. In the 65cc (6-8) class, for example, three or four top runners could be seen banging heads throughout the day. When all was said and done, however. the big dog barking in the "Pup" class was Brandan Leith. "Bad Dog" Brandan scored double wins - impressive wins - against a very tough field. Tyler Schiel ripped off the line to lead race one, with Tre Palmer and Leith giving chase. Leith worked his way around Palmer and then made a spectacular pass over the big jump to take the lead. Chaisson Cozzens was making up for a hum-drum start by shredding through the pack to blast into contention. Leith cruised, while Palmer edged Cozzens for second. Leith wasted little time in the second hatf, leading Palmer, Cozzens, Schlei and Cleb Thilmony out onto the course. Palmer hung tough, but Cozzens was right on his rear fender. Leith reached for that extra gear on lap two, pulling an embarrassing lead on the hard riders just behind him. Cozzens worked past Palmer for second, but Palmer just wouldn't go away, making position two the best duel on the whole racetrack. "Lightning" Leith took it to the house again, making it two in a row for best in the 65cc (6-8) universe, while Cozzens ripped the tapes for second in the moto and second overall. Palmer's teeth-grittingly close third earned him third overall, besting Schlei, Thilmonyand Brodie Larsen in the final results. If you're holding the "Wild West Nationals," you should have at least one "wild wild" race. Enter the 125cc Junior class - and take a bow! This class is always crazy. Add in the fact that this was the first weekend of the new year - and stand back! When the very full gate dropped, It was jake Poole leading the way. That lasted until the big (5uz); 5. Poole struck back at the end of the first lap, outjumping Stewart over the finish-line tabletop. Just behind the leaders, a train wreck at the triple jump took out most of the frontrunning contenders; at least six were involved. That left clear sailing at the top. It was just a matter of who would win and who would finish second. Poole won, with Stewart second. Stewart took it to the class in the second round. His younger brother Degan Stewart and Jeff Morris were trying desperately to chase him down. Poole moved in for the kill and scored the second spot after a hard fight with Degan. Poole closed up on Brennan, and the fight was on! The action was riveting for several laps. until Poole dropped it in a big sweeper, handing Brennan an easy victory and the overall 125cc junior crown. Poole ended up second overaU, leading Paul Williams, Curtis jorgensen and Brian Broughton in the final tally. MESQum MOTO-X PARK MESQUm, NEVADA RESULTS: MARCH 27, 200S (ROUND eN 2) P/W PP: I. Rocley Mountain Enduro Circuit Hare Scrambles Series Round ,: Valley Dirt Riders Hare Scrambles Fredrick Fires the First Shot Bv BILL KAMIN BERTHOUD, CO, APR. 3 ernie Fredrick only played follow-the-Ieader for a few laps before he passed 250cc A winner Michael Moen. From that pOint on, Fredrick held on to win the first sanctioned hare scrambles event of the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit. The former professional downhill bicycle racer enjoyed his morning. "When Moen pitted, I rode hard to widen my lead as much as possible," said Fredrick, who thanked his main sponsor, Colorado B Power Sports. "My YZ450F was really the right bike for this course." The event was held at the Valley Dirt Riders' Berthoud, Colorado, track, just north of metropolitan Denver. Springtime in the Rockies blessed the field with a warm, sunny day, and the track conditions were perfect. The Valley Dirt Riders obviously put on their Sunday best for the benefit of the RMEC opener. RMEC director and Hare Scrambles Series manager Marc Reynolds was pleased with the event's outcome. "The hare scrambles season kicked off without a hitch," said Reynolds, beaming like a Brandan Leith scared the victories in the Pee Wee (7-S), Pee Wee Modified and 60cc (6-S) classes at the Wild West Nationals' second round in Mesquite, Nevada.
