located in Northern California, which is prone to very temI-peramental and ever-changing weather, Honey Lake
Motocross Park was ~anketed in snow for much of the winter.
Easter Saturday presented itself as the perfect day for a preseason
warm-up. Where weather is involved, March is renowned (or
being one of the most unpredictable months in Lassen County;
however, Saturday morning dawned with perfect moto weather.
The format for the weekend was a series of 4S-minute Grand
Prix races, although comparably mellow next to other such races;
the track still incorporated the surrounding wooded areas and
slight, rocky drop-offs as well as the regular motocross track.
Longtime Team Green rider Justin Soule was on hand to show
why he has made off-road racing his main priority. Another a11arounder, Coty Loudenburg, was also eager to tackle the alwayschallenging Honey Lake track.
Not one to make things easy, track owner Larry Wosick had
riders lined up facing their bikes, allowed to hold up their bikes
with one hand only. At the gunshot, racers scrambled to mount
their trusty steeds and engines were fired up as the first race of
the 2005 Honey Lake season officially got under way. The first
rider to navigate the approximately six-minute loop was Soule,
with an I I-second lead on Loudenburg, who had claimed the
second posrtion.
As the race hit the halfway mark, instead of tiring, all the
entrants seemed to be getting faster and faster each lap. Riders
who were here for the fun of it could be heard yelling praises to
themselves after every lap was completed. After 45 minutes and
first, and Loudenburg was an honorable second after challenging
the Kawasaki rider for the entire race.
Top contenders from the morning races advanced through to
one of two main events in the aftemOOf!. The last of the events
saw the A and B riders pitted against one another. B rider
Azevedo surprised everyone by making it off the start gate
seconds before Soule.
':All I knew was that I had started my bike and was out of the
start gate, and next thing I knew, a blur of green had blasted by
me," Azevedo said afterward. "I realized that I had beaten Soule
off the start. and it felt awesome'"
The finale was similar to the previous event in that Soule was
the dominant rider, while Loudenburg again challenged him for
the majority of the race. Soule's off-road experience assisted him
in taking the win.
The day's events were successful, and everyone left happy
after getting their early Honey lake fix. The participation of
everyone who came out to support Honey Lake is much
appreciated, and everyone is looking forward to a fun, awesome
2005 season!
