Utah Sport Riders Association Motocross Round I: Mesquite Moto-X Park PHOTO BY ED HEDDENIMM PRO FOTO Rodriguez Rocks Mesquite! By DICK GOODWIN MESQUITE, NY, MAR. 12 he Utah Sport Riders Association kicked off its 2005 motocross season at the riderfavorite Mesquite Moto-X Park. Weather too good for humans greeted the racers and, on Saturday, the always "wild and woolly" 12Scc Intermediate class produced more chaos than usual. When's the last time you saw a seventhplace finisher standing second on the podium? Anthony Hart rocketed to the first turn in front of the charging Cam ron Olsen and Chris Powell, who made an immediate pass for second. Another racer on the gas was Pat Provencher, fresh off rehab, who shot up to third in the first few turns. Hart had it in hand until dropping it on the east side, leaving Powell in the clean air. Powell stretched out a lead, while Provencher was battling a charging Cameron Rodriguez. Hart was blazing through the pack after his get-off until a spectacular cartwheel down the monster downhill put him out for the day. Olsen leapfrogged past two riders into second in one impressive play, while Colby Caple, Sjon Benedict and Jason Panzer were wrapped into a ball for fifth. Rodriguez made his move on the white-flag lap, swooping past Olsen and charging up to the rear knobby of the leader, Powell. It was close, but Powell held off Rodriguez to take race one, with Olsen a close third. Provencher led Panzer and Benedict for fourth. A Hart-less mota two saw Powell jump into the early lead, with Tyrel Brady and Olsen close behind. Brady augured a corner, Olsen succumbed to mechanical gremlins, and T suddenly it was Powell and Rodriguez running nose to tail. Rodriguez railed the corner after the finish line to take the lead, while Garrett Cisneros was holding off Benedict for third. When Powell went down, the race was all Rodriguez's; he went on to an easy win, and the overall 125cc Intermediate crown. Powell, despite his crash, finished second overall. Panzer led Cisneros and Benedict for spots three through five. The loudest bark among the pups was from the biggest, baddest dog in the Pee Wee (7 -B) class. That would be Brandon Leith, who sported the appropriate number one, of course. "Number One" Leith ripped off the line to lead Preston Whitehouse and Morgan Mackintosh down the long (very long for Pee Wees) start straight. Kameran Hilton fought his way up to the lead pack, but Leith was already making a statement, moving into the next ZIP code. Leith won easily, Whitehouse was a solid second, and Mackintosh nailed down third. In moto two, Leith led the field again, with Whitehouse and Hilton giving chase. An uneventful mota saw Leith establish his dominance for the win and the overall Pee Wee (7-B) title, while Whitehouse grabbed second and second overall, ahead of Hilton, Mackintosh eN and Karston Loader in the final results.
