"This is motocross racing, and
it tests your suspension and
ability to hang on," said PMI promoter Rex Harvey. "PM I
does not see as many injuries because the roughness of the
track connects the brain to the throttle hand."
The spotlight was on Shane Descenzo in the 125cc A class,
and he gave everyone something to watch.
"Showing off pays sometimes," said Descenzo after
attempting a whip that ended in a broken ankle just a few
weeks ago. "Well, at least when I pull it off, it looks good."
Descenzo is 17 years old and is sponsored by M&M
Construction. He has a 4.0 GPA, likes to play MX Unleashed
and go to dodge ball on Monday nights.
In moto one, fast guys Adam Harvey. Matt Whitmarsh.
Hunter Meyer, Bryce Shondeck, Chris Flesia, William Dotson
and Descenzo led a class of 14 riders, all battling for the
holeshot. Harvey. Shondeck and Descenzo left a trail of dust out
of the first turn. By the end of lap one. Descenzo had passed
Shondeck to claim second place, behind Harvey. Then Harvey
and Descenzo steadily checked out from the pack, keeping a
huge lead the entire mota. Meanwhile, some good battles were
shaping up between Flesia, Shondeck and Whitmarsh, who kept
everyone on their toes. Whitmarsh managed to get around both
Flesia and Shondeck in a hurry to finish in third. Moto one
ended with Harvey doing a no-footer across the finish line in
first, Descenzo a strong second, and Whitmarsh a distant third.
The second moto started off with another great start frQm
Descenzo. who came out second, behind Meyer. and followed
by Whitmarsh, Dotson and Harvey. Meyer held the lead from
start to finish. but there was no room for mistakes, as Descenzo
stayed close, followed by Harvey. On the second lap, Harvey
passed Descenzo, who put up a great battle and kept Harvey
on the edge of his seat. Whitmarsh had moved up into fourth by
lap three while fully engaged in a battle with Dorson, who was
scrubbing air off a step-up but went too far to the right and hit a
pole, causing him to endo. As the riders came around for lap
five, Harvey cross-rutted in a turn, putting Descenzo in second
- where he would stay. Mote two ended with Meyer in first,
Descenzo doing a heel-clicker as he finished in second, and
Whitmarsh in third. Descenzo took the overall victory.
Descenzo thanked his parents, Bruce Sass, Bud, and Team
Wolf Gang. Descenzo had help staging from his "gate guy,"
Nick. who sacrificed his white shoes for Descenzo's good start.
When asked about his goals for the race, Shane replied, "I want
to win - duh."
Well, it looks like he accomplished that one with two steady
motos and first overall. Apparently, his brain was connected to
his throttle hand.
