Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, Championship Division Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, High Plains Division Rounds 3/2: Concho Enduro Commander Cody'S the Head Honcho at Concho! By BILL KAMIN BLACKWEU, TX, MAR. 6 ody Potts had to float like a butterfly over the saturated Concho course to card a 3.0202 after more than 35 brutal miles. But he stung like a bee in the end, claiming the event overall from last year's winner, Cole Kirkpatrick, who sported a not-too-shabby 4.0222 for second. Only a week ago, the pOSitions were reversed, when Kirkpatrick overalled the Sidewinders Enduro, with Potts a paper-thin three seconds behind. That was just one more event where muddy conditions resulted in a last-minute shortening of the course. AA rider Michael Wilson was another two minutes back, and Cole's brother Cameron followed in fourth overall for the Overall A trophy. "The club did a great job," exclaimed the youngest Kirkpatrick. "They shortened the course a little bit, and it was awesome!" "I had a good time, and the KTM worked well also," Cole added. "The dirt was crazy in the first special: Some was like Velcro, and a few comers later, it would be like riding on ice." Cole also thanked Cycle Shack of Lubbock, as well as his mom and dad ("Dad" being Richard Kirkpatrick, who claimed top Senior A honors). Texans must have done something bad to deserve the punishment Mother Nature has doled out regularly over the past year. Steady rains on Saturday were just a continuation of the nasty conditions that have prevailed for months. The Sidewinders event held the prior Sunday had been rescheduled due to inclement weather, both this year and last. In 2004, Concho was postponed for the same reason. '" don't get it," groaned one exasperated rider. '" don't think I can afford to keep rebuilding my bike week after week after week." To the great relief of the competitors, the first card flipped on schedule at 8:0 I a.m. More than 180 riders faced the same steady mist that has besieged TSCEC events for months. The opening miles of muddy, sandy Single-track were challenging, even at 15 mph. The average ramped up to 24 at 12 miles, which served only to emphasize the difficult conditions. Some riders succumbed to the slick, challenging rock climbs, though many of these were located in the early transfer sections. A bottleneck developed in a narrow ravine sometime after the first dozen rows, causing irreparable damage to many scores. Sixteen-and-Under Small-Wheel winner Josh Dailey enjoyed himself despite the weather. C 62 IV\AY 4,2005 • CYCLE NEWS "I really liked the canyon with the water flOWing through it - it was coo!!" said the current High Plains class leader, who did, however, agree with most that, "The slimy parts were tough, though." "I hit the first corner off the start, and it was super-greasy," Dennis Hamann smiled; the overall B winner continued with an apt deSCription of the course: "Greasy rocks, greasy climbs with rocks - did I mention rocks?" Hamann thanked Ronnie and Brian Jones of High Desert Honda for their "awesome" support, and also Ross Creek Trail Riders for doing a great job. "It is such a good place to ride," he noted, "no matter what the conditions are." RESULTS a/A EVENT: I. Cody Potts (Yam) (AA). O/A A: I. Cameron Kirkpatrick (KTM) (200 A). AA: I. Lyle Sweeter (55) took the win over Toby Taki (SO) in the Over 50 Open class at round six of the Vet X Winter Series in Anza, California. Vet X Winter Series Round 6: Cahuilla Creek MX A Sweeter Victory By STEVE EMTER ANZA, CA, MAR. 6 T he Vet X competitors were treated to a picture-perfect day at Cahuilla Creek MX, site of round seven of the Winter Series. The track was groomed to perfection. The day started with the gate dropping for the Over 50 Open class, with Moto Worldbacked Yamaha rider Toby Taki darting into the early lead, followed by Honda rider Lyle Sweeter, Ceet rider Dave Jacobus, and Yamaha rider Alan Kent. On the second lap, Taki, Sweeter and Jacobus maintained their positions and started pulling away from Kent and the other riders. The top three riders held on to their pOSitions until the end of the mota. Moto two saw Taki again jump into the early lead, followed by Jacobus and Sweeter. Taki led until lap three, when Jacobus got by and maintained the point for two laps, with Taki working hard to get back in front. Meanwhile, Sweeter was battling his way out of third, and he was able to get by Taki as well. On lap five, Sweeter made the pass for second and then moved all the way to first, which he was able to hold on to until the checkers, closely followed by Taki and Jacobus. The overall went to Sweeter, with 2-1 finishes. Taki was second with a 1-2 tally, and Jacobus' consistent 3-3 finishes garnered third overalL In 36-42 Novice action, Michael Penta held the early lead off the start, with Robert Kong and Matt Eagleton in second and third. As Penta built a commanding lead, Kong and Eagleton battled for second; Eagleton got around Kong on the last lap to take second, dropping Kong to third. In mota two, Penta again broke away early and rode to the win. Behind him, Johnson and Enzo RacinglGB Works-supported Kong were trailing the leader as they came around the first lap. On lap two, Kong passed Johnson, and the order remained the same throughout the moto. The overall went to Penta (I-I), second went to Kong (3-2), and third went to Suzuki rider Ben West, who scored very consistent 4-4 finishes. The 28-35 Pro class charged off the line with Yamaha-mounted Carter Guree taking the early lead. MRD Racing/Chaparral-backed Craig McCall was second, and Suzuki rider Chris Young ran third. Guree began to pull away. putting on a show for the spectators on Cahuilla Creek's large tabletop jump_ The battle for second place began on lap two, with Young passing McCall. In fourth place, Willy Musgrave was charging to try to make up ground. Guree took the win, with Young taking second and Musgrave third. The second mota was again owned by Guree, who scored a f1ag-to-f1ag win, with second and third being a repeat of the first mota as well. The three riders took their finishing positions of the moto and claimed them for the overall spots, with Guree the winner, followed by Young and Musgrave. RESULTS MINI BEG: I. Jaimeson Hearne; 2.
