Riverside Old-Timers Motocross Glen Helen Raceway Park PARTS UNLIMITED Reed Misses the Mark at ROTMX By PRESENTS Ib %.9tb %.OOQ %.a~ II ~W~~~~...,;~.u.W~1 ,. Glen l}elen ~an nernardino, ea. mZl"Y f . " " _. .r-..I • ". DENISE OEVINES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 5 N aching's more demoralizing in racing than to watch all of your competitors go by you - especially if it suddenly dons on you that you're watching the race you're supposed co be rac- ing in! That's just what happened to Kent Reed at the first round of the Over 50 Expert division during the Riverside Old-Timers' series at Glen Helen Raceway Park. While Reed scrambled to suit up, Mark Schuster barely held on to the lead, closely pursued by Terry Messer. By lap three, Schuster and Messer were starting to fade, and both Toni Duni and Ken Greene slipped past. Duni took the mota win, but in the second motc he crashed and broke his collarbone. Reed quickly cleaned the egg off his face by winning the second mota. However, Green (2-2) claimed the overall, with Schuster (3-4) second. There was a close battle between LA's Dennis Foster and Riverside's Ed Wolleson in the first Over 40 Amateur heat. Honda-mounted Wolleson led until the last lap, but Foster slipped past when the pair encountered backmarkers. In the second mota, Foster was plagued with bad luck and finished back in 12th. Wolleson (2-1) claimed victory, ahead of Craig Harris (4-2) and Dave Vicioso (5-3). Dennis Tooman not only led the both Over 60 Expert matos, he placed third overall, well ahead of the majority of Over 50 Experts. Frank Derby (3-2) trailed in second, followed by Bruce Hoover (2-3). Long overdue for a win, Ray Simmons (2-1) finally tasted victory in the Over 50 Amateur class. It looked like Mike Bonefant had second locked up, but he was docked a lap for passing on a yellow flag. Guest rider Paul Needles (I-I) set a fast pace for the Master A riders. Dave Eropkin (2-2) gave chase but could never get close enough to pass. Carl Gazafy pulled out a good lead in the Master Over 50 B contest, but that lead was slowly whittled away by one hard-charging Jeff Blix. In his first club ride, Blix mustered a last-lap pass for the mota victory. The second heat was quite different: Gazafy obviously found the sweet spot on the throttle and not only won his division but beat the entire Over 40 Master B class. Riding probably his best race ever, Steve Popjoy jumped way out in front of the Over 50 Novices, way ahead of Denise deVines and Larry Bush. Just after passing deVines for second, Bush got a little overzealous and nose-dived at the bottom of the whooped-out downhill. DeVines got the better start the second time out; Popjoy rode in her shadow and even mustered one pass, but deVines set up her Suzuki for an inside pass to clinch the overall victory. Despite stalling in the first turn, Over 60 Amateur Ken Feulner made up for his faux pas with back-to-back moto wins. Dennis Rosenberg (3-2) finished second, and Barry Simon (2-3) sat in third. eN RESULTS SUP BEG: I. Richard Roberts (Yam). SUP INT: I. Jordan Burroughs (Suz): 2. Dave Shelton (Yam). 40+ NOV: I.
