Racers Take On the Stadium BY TRACY ESTABROOK DAYTONA, FL, MAR. 5 T he Daytona Municipal Stadium played host to round one of the second annual Winter Nationals. With more than 2S classes to chose from, there was something for everyone. Riders young and old turned out in large numbers. The stadium features a grooved track, which allows little room for passing; this made for some very tight racing. The Speedway bikes started out the main events. With the smell of burning fuel and the loud sounds of revving motors, they were off! Mark Fillebrown took the lead. followed by Charles Lengle. Marc Gauthier, Chris Hathaway, Barry Benkert Jr. and Marty Sheets. It was an outstanding race all the way to the finish, getting the fans pumped up and ready for more racing. Next up was the 50cc Senior (7-8) contest. Suzuki rider Nick McFadden won. followed by Polini pilot Thomas Goodnick and Kawasaki jockey Alex Felland. In the talent· laden 6Scc Modified (7-1 I) class. Yamaha jockey Jake Lewis captured the win, followed by Suzuki riders Daniel J. Bromley, Tyler Campbell. Ryan Rutland. McFadden. Hayden S. Gillim and Ethan Gillim. These young boys were definitely fast and furious in this first round of the series. Pretty soon, they'll likely be giving the big boys a run for their money! The best Youth race olthe day was the BScc Modified (7-1 I) class. In the number-one spot was Honda pilot Patrick Jacobsen, followed by Honda riders Cory Richard and Haden Avery, Suzuki rider Hayden Gillim. and Honda riders Tye Kyles and Cory Wix. These young guns looked like Pros out there as they wowed the fans with their tremendous riding skills. Clearly these boys have what it takes to be champions! The old guys also put on quite a show. In the Senior Over 40 class, Van Rayburn won. followed by his fellow Honda riders Henry Perritt Jr. and Tom McCarthy. Yamaha-mounted Mark Hawk, Rotax rider Jay Ashcroft, and Honda rider Vernon Caldwell. They all showed the youngsters that you only get better with age! Meanwhile. proving that you're only as old as you feel. Johnny Isaacs topped the Super Senior class. followed by Yamaha riders Tony Subler and Emerson Eby and Honda riders Ron Anderson and Wendell Poggie. Obviously, these guys feel like they're only 20 or so, because they were outstanding from start to finish! Aside from a few delays for track maintenance and the occasional crash. round one went off without a hitch. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conniet and lack of time, round two at the stadium was cancelled. The hard work and dedication of all the riders, the AHA, Dave Joiner, Steve Nace, and all the crew members made the opening round a resounding success!
