umpin' johnny" jelderda entered three
classes and went home with three overall
wins at the fifth and final round of the seventh
annual running of the California Gold Cup
Motocross Series, held at the 1-5 Motocross
Track in Gorman. jelderda was perfect in both
the 85cc (12-13) and 85cc Open classes, but
he split mota wins with Parker Eckman in
Supermini racing.
In the first 85cc (12-13) moto, Kyle Engle
absconded with the holeshot, ahead of jelderda,
Brandon Brady and Dylan Brehm. jelderda
quickly made his way to the front, while Brady
scarted hounding Engle over second place. The
race was all jelderda's, as he amassed a 10second lead over Brady, who pushed Engle back
to third near the midway point. james Frigo
finished fourth, with Keith Robinson allover his
back fender for a close fifth.
Moto two turned into a showdown
between Brady and jelderda. The holes hot
went to Brady, but jelderda squeaked past on
the opening lap. Brady wasn't about to give up,
and the two Suzuki riders were glued together
for the entire race, with Jelderda prevailing at
the checkers. Engle was again third, followed
by Frigo and Mason Sweeden.
jelderda got to the checkers first in both
85cc Open races, with Engle getting runner-up
honors on a 2-2 showing. Sweeden (3-3) and
Marcus Carrillo (4-4) earned third and fourth
overall, respectively.
Eckman handed jelderda his only moto loss
on the day in Supermini first-mota action.
Brady crossed the line for third, followed by
Engle and Adrian Roman. jelderda made his
way around both Engle and Eckman early in
moto two to sew up the overall on a 2-1
showing. Eckman finished a close second for
second overall, with Brady going 3-3 for third.
KTM-mounted Mike Victorian was equally
impressive as he went six for six to capture
overall wins in the Pee Wee (7-8), Super Pee
Wee and 6Scc (6-8) classes. Zachary Commans
new his Cobra to second overall in both the
KTM sweep of the top four positions in the
65cc field.
Jake Gagne ran away with victories in both
the 65cc (9-1 I) and 65cc Open events. jake
Mohnike finished second to Gagne in all four
motos. Garrett Eckman rounded out the top
three in the 9-1 I field, with Brandon Scharer
doing the same in the Open racing.
Tanya Elbers, Michelle Skender and Katie
McGuire argued over the Women's-c1ass firstmoto lead, with McGuire eventually pulling
away for the victory. Skender snared the
holeshot in moto two and kept McGuire at bay
for the duration, but it was the 1-2
performances of McGuire that sent her home
with the first-place trophy. Elbers (2-3) got the
better of Skender (5-1) for second overall. eN
