PHOTO BY JOHN BETHEA CMC Golden State Series Finale Day I: 1-5 MX The Battles Begin! By JOHN BETHEA GORMAN, CA, FEB. 26 \ A /hen Vet Pro Chris Young was asked how Y Y he had made up so much ground in one lap after a first-turn spill, he had a smile on his lips but was still steaming underneath after his second-moto melee with Willie Surratt dUring the opening day of a two-day showdown to decide the 2005 MTA West/FMF/909 Golden State Nationals being held at 1-5 MK "I'll just take the fifth:- he said carefully; then, his hands still shaking, he displayed a badly gashed thumb, and shooting a glance at Surratt's pits, he added: "He nailed me. Going into the first turn, I saw a shadow on my tank and looked up just in time to see him [Surratt] landing on me. I went down, but he just blew away." For the past month, these two have been in stunningly close races, and Surratt has emerged victoriously most of the time. So when Young remounted his Suzuki, he rode with vengeance and was suddenly right on his foe's tail within a lap. Officials were amazed at the comeback but were unable to confirm any speculation that Young had cut the track during that drrve. "I'll just say that [Mall) Tedder could see blood in my eyes," Young said, "and he let me by so I could chase Surratt." Catching "Wild Willie" is one thing; passing him is an entirely different matter. Young again had to settle for runner-up honors. He did, however, lick his wounds well enough to turn around and defeat Paul Temmerman for the Over 25 Pro win. Juss Laansoo rode his Holley-sponsored Honda to a sweep of the 250cc and 500cc Pro events. The best race was behind him, for second 250; Japan's Takeshi Koikeda lost second place to Honda-mounted Antonio Balbi during the middle portion of the 20-minute moto, but he gained it back when he got his Yamaha back around with less than two laps to go. Zavery, Washington's Bryan Clevenger scored fourth after having earlier won the 125cc Pro event, leading from start to finish. To be eligible for series honors, riders had to contest at least three qualifiers, which meant that Tye Barnes and Chris Plouffe were only riding for trophies; they secured two firsts. Plouffe rode to decisive sweeps of both the Supermini and BOcc (12-13) classes_ while Barnes aced the Schoolboy class and came back from a first-moto sixth in the first 125cc Intermediate moto to top the second, which was enough for first overall. So Cal rider Jeremy McCool, who has been dominating various 60cc and 80cc events, finally met his match in Vacaville, California's Kyle Tigert. Lancaster, California's Joey Savatgy was in the thick of things each moto, too. In each of their races, all three were right there, battling within a few bikelengths of each other on every lap! Tigert won the 60cc (9-11) class, Savatgy won the 60cc Open class, and Austin Politelli ambushed them all in the 80cc (7-1 I) contest, scoring the second-moto win to eke out the overall. Despite the smallish crowd, numbering just about 1000, the racing was as good as any the series has seen, and the race for the championship now appears to be shaping up into a battle between last year's winner, Kenny Olsson, and threetime champion Anthony Barlow. In the first heat race, in which the top four riders meet, Olsson was unable to catch the fastgating Canadian Nick Fafard and had to sellie for second place. Barlow came in third, and Gary Phelps was a long way behind in fourth. Phelps recovered from a poor first heat and rode with determination to take a good win, ahead of Meldrum and Newman, in the next heat. Courtney once again showed his liking for ice racing and the improvements he has made to his riding style by placing second, behind Olsson, in the next heat, which was sufficient for both of them to qualify directly to the main event. Barlow started in the last qualifying heat knowing full well that not only was a win essential, but Fafard had to finish third or lower for Barlow to go straight into the main. As it happened, Barlow did get the win - but Fafard overtook Meldrum, riding as a reserve, to take second place and thus join Olsson and Courtney in the final. Parts Unlimited Carolina Ultra Series Round J: Camp Coker Motosports Davis, Osborne Battle the Coker Monster By BRYAN HICKS SOCIETY HILLS, SC, FEB. 20 hots were fired and a line drawn in the sand at Camp Coker Motosports, site of the opening round of the Parts Unlimited Carolina Ultra Series. Some call Coker "The Track Too Tuff to Tame" and by all accounts it lived up to its nickname, as very few riders left without sampling some of Coker's coarse sand. Some 535 riders from I I states showed up S ready to do battle for the sought-after title of Ultra Series Champion. Every class was hardfought and hard-won. No rider had the leisure of checking out and putting it on cruise control, becau~e it took only one split second of misdirected concentration and the "Coker Monster" would make you pay dearly. Everyone knew that it was going to be a great day of racing when the first moto saw two of the Southeast's rising stars go head to head in the 12Scc B class: KTM factory rider
