CMC Golden State Series Finale Day 2: 1-5 MX Graduation Day By JOHN BETHEA GORMAN, CA, FEB. 27 I t was graduation day at the CMC's MTA West/FMF/909 Golden State Nationals. The ceremonies at 1-5 MX honored both teachers and students. Russ Wageman. himself a valedictorian from the CMC school back in the late 1970s when he was twice a number-one plate holder, watched proudly as his son R.J. accepted the BOcc Beginner championship and his nephew Kevin collected awards in the 12Scc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes. Likewise, Matt Tedder Sr. watched his band of "Tedder Tots" bag honors in three classes. Matt Jr. scored in the 250cc Intermediates, Dakota aced the 80ce Superminis. and Myles was head of the BOcc (14-16) class. Even Papa got into the act and nearly claimed his own title in Over 40 Masters class, winning the day's event but finishing the series mere points behind triple champion Jon Zahrt, who also earned the Over 25 and Over 30 Masters titles. Two other seniors, Willie Surratt and Chris Young, showed their youngster how it's done. Willie, a (ormer minibike champion himself, won the tenaciousty battled Vet Pro title, while his son Ryan got fourth in Pee Wee (7-B) points. Young bested the Over 2S Pros, while his sons Cole and Cody placed second in the BOcc Beginner class and sixth in the BOcc (12-13) class, respectively. The elder Surratt and Young, who only the day before had tangled in a fight over first-turn honors, kept up their series-long argument in the Vet Pro going with more intense action. On this day, however, it was not a knock-down, drag-out affair, as cooler heads prevailed. Young got the big trophy, but Surratt got the plaque. Elementary school honors went to Kinser Endicott, who proved that perseverance can pay ofr. Coming into this weekend, he was still down in both the 50cc (7 -BO and 60cc (O-B) Zach Osborne of Abingdon, Virginia, and AI Lane Yamaha rider Dale Davis of Charlotte, North Carolina. From gate to checkered flag, the action was intense. The start saw Justin McBrayer pull the holeshot, while both Davis and Osborne got upper midpack starts. Just four turns later, Matthew Campbell took the lead. Davis and Osborne made their way through traffic and were ready to capitalize when Campbell made a mistake, taking over first and second, respectively, by the end of the first lap. By the end of the third lap, Davis had a lead of just four-hundredths of a second on Osborne when he got crossed up in the sand, allowing Osborne to take over the number-one spot. Two turns later, Davis found Osborne having lunch with the Coker Monster, and Davis regained the lead. Osborne pulled out all the stopS in his attempt to catch Davis, but with no luck. Davis won mO[Q one by a front tire over Osborne. class standings. But perfect final scores gave him enough points to garner championships in both. In particular, his SOcc title wasn't certain until the very last moto, in which he defeated Tyler Burgess by only one position in points. leading the middle-school procession was Kyle Tigert, another triple champion. All weekend long, in a dozen matos, he had battled with Jeremy McCool and Joey Savatgy for supremacy in 60cc (9-1 I), 60cc Open and BOcc (7-11) events. The proverbial blanket could have covered the trio in just about every race, but it was Tigert who finally prevailed. Even night school had a representative graduating with honors! Proving "better late than never" is still in vogue, Ron Matteri, at age 43, finally got his intro to MX. The former District 36 Enduro rider tried motocrossin' for the first time ever and won the Over 40 Amateur championship. But it didn't come easily. It took a last-lap pass on points leader Vernon Poole in the very last mota to give the Moose Racing rookie the title. The former hare scrambler has been hooked. eN 1-5 MX GoRMAN, CAUFORNIA RiSUUS: FEBRUARY 27, 2005 (DAY 2 OF 2) 50 BEG: I. Mar-cus Nlms (Pol): 2. Collin Whitney (KTM); 3. 8.11ey Dud. (Pol); 1.
