World C'ship Ice Racing Series Round T: Corel Centre Oh, Canadal By AMANDA URSINI KANATA, ONT, CANADA, FEB. 19 or round seven, the 29th annual World Championship Ice Racing Series ventured up north to the beautiful Corel Centre in Kanata, Ontario, Canada. Thousands of enthusiastic race fans from the provinces of Ontario and Quebec showed up to cheer on their favorite sons. A large contingent of Canadian racers signed up, including St. Alexis Des Monts, Quebec's three-time Canadian National racing champion Michel Lemay. The first round of four-lap heat races were all won by ICE/WSRA:s top World Championship points racers: Charlie "The Edge" Venegas from San Bernardino, California; James "Mad Dog" Mann from Bolton, England; and Ronny "Rock Star" Kemp from Cary, North Carolina. Also noteworthy were fine runner-up five-point finishes by 2004 Rookie Of The Year Tyler Hansen from Missoula, Montana; John Bennett from Dundas, Ontario; and Quebec's Lemay. Second-round heat-race victories were recorded by Hansen, Venegas and Kemp. As the racers prepared for the final two events, it became obvious by the positive reaction from the crowd the riders were receiving that it had been way too long since they'd raced in Canada. The last time ICE/WSRA visited our neighbors to the north was in 1998. That trip was met with one of the F worst natural disasters in Canada's recorded history, the great ice storm of 1998. Fortunately, this year the weather was normal, the racing and the fans were great, and World Championship Ice Racing is planning a return trip soon. Venegas, Kemp and Mann moved on to the main event on points, but first the four.lap, sixrider last-chance qualifier had to be contested, so that three additional riders could transfer to meet them. Hansen, Lemay and Eddie Martinez from Laguna Hills, California, lined up on the front row, while Shawinigan, Quebec's Philip Lemay, Bennett, and Gaitan Carignan from Three Rivers, Quebec, all took their positions 10 yards back. When the gate was released, Hansen took the early lead, with Michel and Martinez in hot pursuit. On lap three, Michel passed Hansen for the lead. He went on to win, followed by Hansen, Martinez, Philip, Bennett and Carignan. The six-lap main event launched from the grid into the first turn. Venegas took the early lead, with Kemp and Mann trying to stay within striking distance. By the halfway point, Michel had worked his way to fourth and was closing on Mann, in third. Suddenly. perhaps trying too hard in front of the hometown fans, Michel lost control of his nitro speedway bike and flew up out of the racing groove and into the crash pads. Venegas took the win, and a commanding World Championship points lead. Kemp finished a strong second, with Mann taking the final podium spot. Hansen, Martinez and an unhurt but dejected Michel finished fourth through
